This might be T.M.I. but I am going through a separation from my husband right now and I cannot take my chickens
I have 8 chickens, all hens. One is a black sex link (older but still lays) one is sweetheart Rhode Island Red (older, no longer laying) 5 are red sexlinks (about 6mo old and...
Okay, this is personal, but if anyone has any words of wisdom...
I've been married 10 yrs as of Sept. 19th. On Sept. 7th my husband and I separated. The house we live in is his dad's (in his dad's name) so I am the one who left. When my husband is at work during the weekday, I come to the...
I'm in a "situation" where I'm soon going to have to find a new home(s) for my 8 hens. I'm not sure about the age of 2 of them (one black sex link and one Rhode Island Red) but the the others I got as chicks back in April. Five of them are red sex links and the other is an EE, I think. All of...
My black sex link is beginning to molt. She's missing a bunch of feathers on one side of her rump and her pretty tail feathers are ragged and few.
My questions are: Is it normal to molt this time of year? Should I expect any behavior changes in egg laying? Will her poos by any different?
I was thinking about covering my ladder style roost in contact paper so that it'd be easier to keep clean. BUT then I started thinking that it could potentially make the chickens feet slip. What do you all think?
When I was cleaning the coop this morning, I saw a tiny bit of blood in some poo. It actually was more like a tiny piece of tissue or something. (Sorry if that grossed anyone out) I do see this occasionally, but it's pretty rare. I'm not sure who it came from. I have two adult chickens...
My pullets are 18wks old and one started laying yesterday, another, today. I found both eggs on top of the nest boxes. I put wooden eggs in two of the nest boxes to try to incourage them to lay there. I just put my two older hens in with the little girls and one of the older ones layed in the...
My chickens were out free ranging when I heard my DH yell, "You better go check on LuLu! She's out there fighting something!" So, I run outside and found her standing over a mole (or vole, I'm not sure which)! I didn't know if it'd hurt her or not if she ate it so I got a shovel and threw it...
So I started a post a couple of days ago that I was running out of chick food
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=80667
So I just bought a small bad of chick food and paid about the same price as I would have if I'd just bought a 50lb. bag. Well, I'm getting ready to go...
My "chicks" are going to be 18wks old next Friday. I'm out of starter/grower and need to get them more food. It only comes in 50lb. bags so I'm pretty sure most of that would go to waste, as they soon will be eating layer. What should I do?
There was a thread on here recently about some sort of pellets that are used in horse stalls and they can also be used in chicken coops. Can anyone remember what they were called?
Okay, I was at SS today and I remembered what it was....pellets for horse stalls! Can these be used in a chicken...
This evening my DH and I were at Lowes and he stops to look at mini fridges. I asked what in the world he was looking at them for and he says, "For the new coop". For someone that wants a little to do with the chickens as possible he sure is interested in making the coop fancy! He said it'd...
Okay, this is hen is about 14wks. old now and has had about 5 different names. I just can't decide so I need your help.
Should I name her:
Lacey (for the white lacey feather pattern on her neck)
Sweet Pea (becuase she is the sweetest of the 6 I got and lets me hold her and snuggle with her)
I took the box and product with me to the vet when I took my RIR. I showed the vet the Ivomec and after reading it he said that if you use it on laying hens, you can NEVER eat the eggs again!! Has anyone else ever heard that?
So, as many of you may know, Ruby (RIR) is in the chicken hospital in my bathroom. LuLu is left in the run/coop by herself. Do you think she's probably lonely?? For that matter, could Ruby be lonely too?
Well, actually yesterday too. I took her yesterday and had her exrayed. She sounded like Darth Vader, the poor thing. Well, between the lungs, heart and liver, it's suppose to have an hourglass shape with air sacks on both sides. Well, Ruby has no hourglass shape and is super full of fluid...
