Will I just get a random off color out of a buff/blue or buff/black pairing, or will I get an actual color? I have a buff roo (maybe, still not sure) in with a 2 black, 1 blue, and 1 buff hens.

I still have my 5 month old silkies on chick feed, but I ran out of feed and I am going to go pick some up. Should I keep them on chick feed for longer or start them on layer feed since they are 5 mo?
Thanks!
Amy
I have a buff silkie roo that need a flock. He is about 4 months old and is gorgeous (although he is in the middle of molting)! He has a great beard and crest and great feathering on his feet. I was hoping to show him when he got a little older, but he crows and we live in a neighborhood, so the...
I have 3 buff silkies that I would like to get some outside knowledgeable opinions on. I would like to maybe start a small buff breeding program, do these silkies look good enough to start with? Also, is it asking for problems showing un-vaccinated chickens? They are around 12-14 weeks (I...
I have a sweet little 12ish week old silkie roo. He has a crooked beak, but has been doing fine until today. Today, while he was running around the yard, I noticed that he seemed to be holding his head to the side. Hmmm, I thought 'maybe he can't see past his crest' - so I trimmed it and that...
I know these guys are still a little young (8 weeks), but I have 2 others that are the same age and from the same batch of eggs that are obviously boys. So hoping for girls here!
Chocolate - Chicken #1 - thinking pullet on this one?!
And Charlie - Chicken #2 - not sure on this one. No...
I have a 7ish week old buff silkie. It is has a walnut comb that is larger then my other chick's combs and is a dark redish/black color. Does this indicate roo? It has a nice little puff of feathers on the head and looks pretty pullet-ish, but the comb is worrying me. It also has a crooked...
Saw this on CL again, only this time it is FREE!!! I can't get it, but maybe someone else will snatch it up! Seattle area...

Ok. I realize this is still pretty early, but can anyone give me guesses on which are pullets and which are roos? I will put them by #s, but for my own benifit looking back I have to add names as well! They have started chest bumping chasing each other, but that doesn't indicate sex does it...
I have 6 silkie chicks that are a bit over 5 weeks old. I have had them off the heat lamp for over a week and the last 2 nights they slept in my garage in their brooder. At night they all pile on each other and sleep, but by the time I check on them in the morning they are busy pecking around...
Today is day 22 and I have already had a ton of hatches and a lot of pips, but I think my temperature just dropped down to about 90ish for maybe an hour! Did this probably shrink wrap my chicks? I guess I will have to wait and watch, but any tips would be great.

I have a little quail that has been working on hatching since last night. She hasn't made any progress for quite a while, she seems to not be able to turn, so she is just pecking the area that she already got (does this make sense?). If, by this evening she isn't out I want to help her...
We have silkies and quail hatching in the same incubator, but the quail eggs and chicks are in a plastic divider. Problem is one of my silkie jumped in there and is cruising around bulldozing all the quail chicks and tiny quail eggs. I wasn't going to open the incubator for another 3 1/2 hours...
Today is day 21 and my eggs are starting to pip and I have 1 hatch! Out of my 6 silkie eggs already 3 have pips and out of my sister's 30+ quail eggs we have I-don't-even-know-how-many pips (all the eggs are spotted, a little hard to spot pips!) and 1 hatch! Soooo fun, just wish they would...
I found this on CL. I can't have anymore chickens, but it would make an inexpensive and VERY cute coop!

Meet Lafawnda, a real, live Dr. Seuss bird! Up until I hatched out Lafawnda I thought that Dr. Seuss had made up this unusual bird! Notice the matching tuffs of hair?

First, let me explain what is going on with this hatch. I have over 30 quail eggs and 6 silkie eggs in the incubator together. They are in an auto turner with some quail rails and some chicken rails. I staggered when I put them in by a couple of days, so they would hatch at the same time (21...
We have some Coturnix quail hatching in about 2 weeks and we had a few questions before they hatch. Do they need grit (I am assuming yes) if so, can they use the same chick grit that I have for my chicks? Will purina flock raiser work for the quail chicks? That is what they suggested at the...
So I thought that 2 of my silkies were buff, but as they are getting older I am wondering if there is any chance that they are splash. The eggs that I hatched them from were from every color silkie, so they could be any color. Anybody have any ideas? Their wings are getting speckles and they...
