Ummm.... I have a silkie who now likes to take her two babies into the nest box for shelter. Needless to say, we have had more eggs with a little poo on them.
What do I do? Do I wash them as soon as I bring them in with some magical solution that wont push the bacteria into the shell? Clean it...
One of the chicks from my most recent hatch had an underdeveloped or deformed chest cavity.
This is what I observed.....
For the first two days I could tell something was wrong with the chick, but couldn't put my finger on it. It wasn't stargazing/wryneck or splay leg, but the chick was...
This blue roo just started crowing. I figured it was time to snap some pics and ask for an experienced opinion.
I'm pretty sure he is not SQ.... of course I dunno.
The not so "show standard" qualities that my inexperienced eye sees......
1. He started growing visable red wattles.
2. He is...
Well, I have Winter on my mind...
How do silkies do in winter? Will they need to be housed all season, or do they keep warm enough on their own?
Will chickens go into a warm environment on their own if its provided? I like to keep them free range, I just want to know they will be smart enough to...
Right now, I am so angry and upset I can't see strait.
I'm feeling very irresponsible and guilty as well. I recently introduced my 5 week old lavender split silkie chicks with my broody into the flock. Everything was going great. While I am home I let my chickens run free range in the back yard...
My broody got up to eat and drink, somehow sQuished an egg. There was yolk ect all over some of the eggs. What do I do? I cleaned things up as best as I could. I took a warm damp rag to the ones with ick on em. Anything else? Or should I just let it be and cross my fingers?
Thanks

Just out of curiosity, about how many years does a rooster last in a breeding flock? I know with hens it's a few years till their fertility rates drop. What about roosters though? I have tried to research the answer to this question with no luck
Thanks!

Pick up only, I am 5 minutes from Louisville's East End.
I bought one of those Little Giant things and I can't get the temp right
I will get it just below or just below 101.0 degrees and just above 102.0 degrees, no matter how slightly I turn the stupid knob!
Sorry had to vent
Thank goodness my broody is sitting on the majority of the eggs!

I went to TSC and bought one of those still air incubators. I am still up in the air as whether I should use my broody to hatch the eggs I have on the way or this over priced piece of styrofoam
I have a silkie hen that is brooding on 8 duds. She has been brooding for approximately the last ten...
Well, I decided to get some fertile eggs to replace the duds my silkie hen has been sitting on for the last ten days. Any tips on replacing her eggs with the new ones, aside from watch out for that beak? I am not going to remove the duds till the new eggs arrive.
Thanks!

My silky hen layed a clutch of eight. I let her go broody because our young roo seemed to be breeding with her. She has been brooding for approximately 10 days now. I went out and candled all the eggs, not one fertile one in the clutch. small yolk and air pockets in all of them, no veins. I...
I believe my buff may be a roo? He? is approximately 5-6 months old. No crowing but, today I saw him doing the "rooster shuffle" with my splash roo. I started reading posts on sexing silkies by description I am thinking roo, what do you guys think?
Thanks

After trying to rehome my 6 extra roosters for weeks, I broke down and put them on craigs list
A guy contacted me who had 52 hens and 1 very busy rooster
He took all six of them to help out his poor overworked roo. I was so scared putting them on craigs list, but this turned out to be a...
