They'd make a mint off of urban chicken farmers wanting to keep roosters. I wish I were mechanically minded. I'd do it myself. I only want ten percent for the idea.
I love the idea of the coops opening automatically in the morning, so I could sleep in, but I worry about the doors shutting before everyone is inside in the evening. Some of my chickens need to be reminded they don't roost in trees. Have those of you who have automatic doors found that to be a...
If someone could explain the genetics of spangling and lacing, including dominance and gender linkage if any, in simple terms, I would be forever grateful.
I have two enclosures side by side; one for my Spitzhaubens, and one for my Brabanters, all hatched this spring. They've all been free ranging together peacefully, going in and out of each other's runs, and even coops. I'd occasionally have to move someone back to their own coop in the evening...
I currently have five Appenzeller Spitzhaubens (ten weeks old). Three are cockerels. I'm hatching another batch in hopes of getting some more pullets. I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm thinking about integrating the next batch of Spitz hatchlings into the big coop. I'm wondering if I do it...
A newbie posted elsewhere that coming to this forum was a terrifying experience. Chicks are sick. Chicks are injured. Chicks have died. I'd like to reassure them, and anyone else that needs reassurance, that chickens which are sick, injured, and/or dying are the exception not the rule. Mine have...
One is now allowed 8 on any sized lot. One is no longer allowed a rooster, but if you had roosters before the ordinances were put in place, they are grandfathered in. There are set back requirement for coops.
I was actually allowed more under the old rules.
If I wanted to buy eggs, could I just put them under an orpington hen? Would she sit on them for the required amount of time, or do I have to wait until she decides to go broody? Thank you.
When they do their little dominance dance, and then go about their business. How do you know who won? Is it the one who looks away first or last? Or is there some other clue?
Sometimes in reading, I come across terms like porcelain or partridge to describe colors. I don't know what they mean. Is there a site where I can look this stuff up?
This morning the crows were making a lot of noise in the backyard. It sounded like the Hitchcock movie. I went out to see what was going on, and there was a bald eagle with Roz in his claws! I ran at it, and it dropped her. She ran behind the woodpile. I've got her inside now. I poured iodine...
I'd like to get some green egg layers at some point. If I understand correctly, the green egg layers will have green legs, but not necessarily right away. I don't have room for a large flock, so I don't want to get chicks that will give me more of what I have. Thank you.
Maybe you all already know about it, but I just found a really interesting website with a weekly cartoon about raising chickens. http://coopdegrace.com/
