Not sure how to handle our new chick situation

We have an initial flock of 17. In April one hen went broody. The kids begged me to let her hatch out some chicks. I couldn't say no anymore because my own curiosity about the process got the better of me. LOL Out of six, one died and one lived. The rest did nothing. Now we have mama and...

Advice needed for first timer processing a bird

Not much to say other than the roo has gotten much too dangerous to have around my kids. The denial has gone on long enough and the decision has been made. I want to make sure we are prepared properly and do this as humanely and respectfully as possible. I'd like to see this dealt with by the...

    Broody or not?

I have one hen the squawks like a terydactyl when we go near her in the nesting box. It seems that she stays in that box as long as there is an egg beneath her. After we take it from her she eventually leaves the box. I have another hen that always seems to be sitting on a number of eggs...

    Uhhhh......poopy butt

LOL Sorry. I don't know a better way to explain it. I have one BO hen that has poo on her butt feathers. Her vent looks perfectly fine to me and she is not behaving oddly at all. Other than it looking nasty, should I be concerned? I am not ready to get all freaked out since it happens to...

Ack! Two of my hens are getting plucked clean under their beaks

What the heck!? Grrrrrr..........I noticed a little bit of a bald spot below one of my hens beaks the other day. It looked like the feathers were growing back and there was no injury or anything. I figured something odd happened and that it would be fine. I just went out the coop and found...

Rooster mounting hens in front of us.

I have seen reference that this is not be allowed. Mine does this all the time. Can someone please explain why this is not acceptable? I guess we should start stopping this behavior.

When should I be worried about blood on an egg?

Our chickens began laying last week Monday. Since then two of them have laid one egg each with a little bit of blood on the shells. I assume this is because their bodies are not used to laying yet. Are there any signs I should look for that it could be more of a problem? I have Storey's...

    Rooster with chipped beak

I noticed today that my rooster has chipped his beak. I don't know what happened. Is there any reason to be overly concerned about this? Will it grow back?

Is this hen close laying an egg or is she sick?

Today when I went out to the coop to fill the feeder and change out the water, I noticed one of my EE hens was rather loud. The noise seems to be the same as the other hens only substantially louder. It sounds like a screeching really. To me, it is like nails on a chalkboard or chewing on...

Health Hazard warning on bag of grit?

I went to pick up a bag of grit today and was rather concerned about the Health Hazards warning on it. I decided not to buy this particular bag. It said it contains aluminum oxide. Now why would I want to give my chickens something to injest that we know is harmful to humans? How many...

    Mixing starter and layer

Could I mix starter and layer feeds until my flock starts to lay? The reason I ask is because my current source, which I trust very much and have a close relationship with, only uses starter and layer, but not a grower. I asked them about this and they said that on their farm they only use...

    Organic scratch in Wisconsin?

Does anyone know if anyone carries organic chicken scratch in Wisconsin? I can't seem to find any. I ordered a five pound bag initially from Arcata Pet, but want to get a larger bag now. The shipping on anything larger is simply outrageous.

    Biosecurity

I'd like to know more about it. I'd like to know what you all think about the guidelines. I know that we don't fully follow them. It is mostly because we are new to chickens and haven't been able to get things fenced in the way we would like. What we had planned out turned out to not be the...

    Fencing

We plan to fence in a large area for our chickens. I am going to guess it will be about 1/2 to 3/4 of an acre or so. They are currently free ranging in the yard and tall grass. They are locked up safely at night. Since they are locked up every night, do we still have to dig down and bury the...

    Outside time?

At a week old is it okay for us to take the brooders outside and set them on the deck for a while for them to get sunshine and fresh air?

    Something is wrong

We got our chicks on Tuesday and we seem to have an unwell chick. I don't see any signs of diarrhea, but it is quite listless and droopy. It doesn't seem to care anymore when the other chicks just walk right on top of her. Should she be removed or what? I just can't find any good info in the...

    HI from WI!

We are new to the chicken raising world and just received our new chicks on Tuesday. We have 19 (one died in transportation). They are a mixed of Buff Orpingtons, Golden Laced Wyandottes and Easter Eggers. I am finding myself with new questions everyday as we learn about them.
