I posted a few weeks back about my older hen, Gladys, who was lethargic/sitting around/breathing heavily but still eating and drinking properly. She's progressed over the past few weeks, but still occasionally will "rest" in the hen house.
Today I walked out to see what the other hens were...
Gladys, the last of our original trio of barred rock hens, has been increasingly lethargic over the past week or so. She is eating and drinking fine. We have seeing her "resting" more during the day by sitting down in the yard.
When I returned from a 5-day trip to GA, my partner mentioned that...

We have six barred rock pullets we got in early May. Today we got our first little egg from one of them and I am so happy that I was home and able to go out there and check when I saw one of the hens coming out of the henhouse. Here are pictures:
Here is the baby egg next to one of Gladys' eggs:
Hi,
Back when Ida had to be put to sleep due to illness, our neighbor "loaned" us his granny barred rock to keep Gladys company. She's been with us through the summer months and has adjusted quite well. She goes to bed really early because she can barely see in the daylight. Up until a couple...
Ok -
Last night we had our two older hens in with our six 9 week olds and Gladys was BESIDE herself mad. She paced the run and wanted nothing but OUT of that run/coop. Once it got dark we were able to place her in the coop for the night, but not before she harrassed our half-blind loaner...
I've never seen any of our chickens (older and young) attempt to catch anything larger than a worm....
This AM, one of our 7-week old chicks was running around with a mole in its beak, attempting to get away from the other chicks who were chasing her - frantically trying to get a piece of the...
Here is a pic of some of the chicks chillin' out on the patio furniture yesterday. The girls are lovin' their new coop/run but prefer to be out in the yard with us if we are outside. They definitely know who their "mommies" are...
Here is a similiar picture that was taken a week or two...
Hello - we spent every daylight hour this weekend building a run onto our new Cedar Grove Products 4x6 coop. The chicks were under our feet the entire time supervising. Several times we had 2-3 on the ladder with us - making sure that we were doing this correctly!
Here are some pictures to give...
Our 5 week old chicks have grown accustomed to staying outdoors in their little outdoor run/coop during the daytime hours, all day.
We've been bringing them in at night up to this point. We have brought them in initially because it got cooler at night. That's not the case anymore.
It's warm...
I thought I'd post a pic of the henhouse/run we use for our two barred rock hens, Gladys and Granny.
We also have six, 4-week old barred rock chicks who are quickly outgrowing their plastic container home in our sunroom.
We've managed to fashion a daytime run for the chicks out of a swing...
Our six, 4-week old barred rock chicks are quickly outgrowing our rubbermaid "home" in the sunroom. We were able to rig up a make-shift outdoor run for them last week and they enjoyed being in the grass and sun.
This weekend we rigged up a sturdier coop for them - granted, we don't have any...
Today I put a bin of dirt into our 3-week old barred rock chicks' pen and they had a blast rolling around in the dirt...I took some video of them if you are interested.
Here's a video of their first visit outside in the grass. If you watch closely you will see our yellow lab, Sierra, sniffing...
Hey - Since Ida had to be put to sleep a couple of weeks ago we've become moms to six new barred rock chicks. They are adorable and are settling in nicely. Our dogs are very curious about them and the cats are too. Here are a few pics from their first day home:
My hen, Ida Mae ( a 2 1/2 year old barred rock) has been "under the weather" today - not her normal chipper self.
She's been very lethargic and staying in the chicken run even when we open the door so she and her sister can "free range". She stands with her neck not fully extended, with her...
We lost one of our trio of barred rock hens last year and have been waiting until spring to add 2-3 more hens to our little family.
We live in Southeastern PA and would love to buy some pullets in our area. We are also willing to pay to have them shipped to us if they are not in our area...
