We have one FREE BLRW roo for pick up. From excellent breeder stock (Red Roof Hens) that we hatched back in May. The hens are ready to move over to the big girl coop and we don't have room for another rooster. I can get a picture if requested, but he is a darker roo - I guess Black. Our current...
we had some chicks hatch Wed/Thurs, 5 total. 4 are doing great and being normal chicks. One is much smaller than the others and extremely sleepy. I have tried to show it the food and water, and watched to see its behavior. The only thing it really seems to want is sleep.
Should I be more...
My DH has agreed to construct a shelter for a peafowl this summer, but we are not sure what to build. We live in New England so it is COLD in the winter. A treehouse won't work as we don't have good tall trees (the only pea I know of has a nice treehouse at his farm). Any pointers on what would...
My chickens are taking to dirt a grass paddock which is 1/4-1/2 acre size. They scratch and tufts of grass and dirt go flying. The other similarly sized paddock is rock and unimproved dirt with minimal stubby grass. They never go in that one. Nor do they do this on our lawn which seems healthy...
I know what they are, as will muffi who kindly hatched them for us in her incubator. They hatched yesterday and came home today!
What is your guess?

I can provide hints if anyone wants.
we have some eggs that we won't eat as a precaution (after treating the flock with some meds) for a little bit. is there a good way to dispose of them? can they be hardboiled and composted, or composted directly?
I have read the "cannibalism" thread which gave good ideas, but thought I might post since I am not sure the original cause here.
I'm the usual chicken tender, but my DH has been doing almost all our chicken care as I have had pretty bad morning sickness for the last two months. He's also taken...
We are have been getting some dinosaur (well, almost) sized eggs from one of our EE pullets. This girl (not sure which since I don't hang out in coop this time of year) lays beautiful blue eggs too, though most are normal sized.
ok, ready? here they are: today's, yesterday's, a healthy sized...
Anyone here have a good weather station that they use in conjunction with monitoring the coop?
I would ideally like one that has the usuals, and is/has:
-wireless
-up to 3 outdoor sensors (barn, coop, and just outdoors), so good range, maybe 200ft necessary.
-humidity
-barometric pressure and...
Today the girls got to go outside the run. They were delighted as it was the first time in a while.
While out and observing, I noticed that two of them have bare areas, right near the base of the tail on the back. Is this
a) Rooster favoritism?
or
b) pecking due to inside and boredom after...
Well, we finally got them a cabbage (they are spoiled with other goodies) and at first they were perplexed by it. But when I went to go look at it a little later, this is what I saw:
A little later in the day, it was down to a husk.
I guess we'll be getting more than one next time. Good...
Hi,
In the last 3 days we got 2 ft of snow here and today the winds are howling.
Do any of you ever just keep the coop shut during the day?
I opened the door but the chickies have no interest in being outside even in their little shoveled area. I can understand that. Still, I feel like them...
in just the past few days we've had some eggs I'll describe as splat eggs. that is, picture chicken perched on roost, with egg splattered below it... we don't actually see the chicken on the roost, of course, just the egg.
they are not getting eaten, just dropped from up high, making a mess...
This may be a dumb question but we have a metal water fount. We got one of the heater base things that you put the metal fount on. My husband has run the cord into the coop, but could the shavings catch fire? Should we put it outside (seems inefficient)?
Or just raise it off the ground more? I'm...
Shortly after our hens started laying, we got all geeky about it. It started as a Google spreadsheet, and turned into this...
So we have 12 hens, 6 EEs and 6 Black sex links, all the same age (5+ months now).
Let me know if you have questions about it. It took a bit to figure out at first...
ok, here's the background... I should start with: yeah, I love animals.
have a 14.5 yr old male who has diabetes. 2x day insulin shots. we have an established routine and it takes about 15 minutes to do his stuff. his kidney function is decreased somewhat, but hasn't needed any special...
well, one day after here and commenting in another thread on my hens, I came home tonight to not one, but TWO baby eggs! One green, from one of our EEs, and one brown, from one of our Black Sex Links. All the hens are raised from day olds and are right at 21 wks now!
Both are tiny, but solid...
I know I have become a chicken crazy because I spend my time looking at people's sheds and outbuildings to see if there are chickens as we drive by! I see them at places that have other animals (horses, sheep, cows) and places that don't. There are more people keeping chickens than I would have...
when I am around all my chickens, including my rooster, seem to coo at me; it's not like a bawk bok type noise. but quieter and almost gentle sounding. Any ideas on what this means? At the least I think it means they are interested in me, but are they recognizing me as their mom or something...
Well, yesterday we had our first two alpacas arrive to our farm. We've had alps since 2005 but at other places since we didn't then have a place ourselves. Got the place last year, put the fences in this year... and our first arrivals yesterday. Soon we'll have all our boys here (and girls will...
