When hubby went out to do chicken care, he found one of our Barred Rock hens dead under the roost. She may have been there for hours--we let them out in the run in the morning before we go to work, and do chicken care in the afternoon.
She was a beautiful, healthy bird as far as we could tell...
I know a lady who raises rabbits. She needs to find a home for one of her Jersey Wooley does. The rabbit is in southern Indiana. If anyone is interested, post here and I will assist with the exchange of info. Sorry, I do not have a photo or any more info at this time.
Soo, when we got our first chickens in April this year, we just fell in love. Hub decided a couple of month later he wanted some easter eggers, sooo...when we saw Auracana chicks at a farm auction, he bid and won.
Long story short, we moved the little ones to the coop but kept them separate...
One of my two month old Auracana chicks got her head stuck in the corner of the coop. We have the younger chickens divided from the older with a wall of pallets and she somehow got her head stuck where the pallet meets the wall.
Anyway, her head is raw, no active bleeding. I have moved her...
This weekend on Chicken TV was the Great Bug Hunt. We let the girls (all ten) out of the coop and run for the first time and baby-sat them while they checked out the yard.
If I knew chickens were this much fun, I would have had them years ago! It was a learning experience for all of us. I...
I have moved one of our Auracana chicks to an "infirmary". I had a small mammal cage, so I fixed it up for her and she is now hanging out in the master bath.
We noticed several days ago that she walked funny. I don't know if her leg is fractured or dislocated. She is much smaller than the...
Do you wash the eggs when you bring them in? Before you use them? What do you use to wash them?
I read that you can force bacteria through the shells if washed to forcefully.
What's the scoop, gang?
At night, after being shut in the coop, my chickens all huddle together in a corner of the coop, the corner by the door. I often find eggs there. They have just started laying, it isn't a regular thing yet.
They have a nice, three tier roost and rarely use it.
I wish they would. When I open...
I can't do anything in the coop without being covered in chickens. They land on my shoulders, if I have to bend over, they land on my butt. They sit on my arms. Spoiled things. They are sweeties, but spoiled.
I would eventually like to raise threatened heritage animals, perhaps the smaller livestock like rabbits, donkeys and goats. I would love to have the Ancient White Park cattle and the American Cream Draft horse, but those are most likely out of my league.
But I would love to hear is anyone...
OK, so our original group of ten girls are doing great, 12 weeks old. They are so much fun and love to interact with us. Soooo....
At a farm auction last week, Hub bid on Araucana chicks. Ten more chicks! One didn't make it through the first night, but the rest are bright-eyed and active...
I have ten chicks, a week old. We are starting to build the coop this weekend. How many nesting boxes do I need for the chickens? Do they each need their own box? Do they share?
I'll miss them when they have to move to the coop-they are in my master bath right now and I love watching and...
