I guess I need to explain first, I have a 4'x6' coop attached to a 8'x16' run. As my daughter called it I built a "play ground" for them in the run part. We've had 8, year old hens and they go in the coop every night to roost. I recently got 6, 6 month old hens. I can't seem to get to roost...
We have 9 laying ladies and it seems to be recently that right at sun up they are very vocal. It appears to be the 2 buffs that start but they all chime in. They start around 5:30am. They are secure in run/coop area so they can come and go as they please. Do I need to secure them in the coop...
Have have 9 laying ladies for quite a few months now but one of them (don't know who) seems to be laying hers in the coop all of a sudden. I have a pretty good size coop with 4 nesting boxes for the 9 we have ( I plan to get more eventually) so it isn't that there isn't enough room. Any thoughts?
Came home from work to find a Buff limping real bad and she won't even try to put her foot down. Once I got her seperated in a rabbit cage she has both legs stretched out behind her and won't attempt to use either one. I can't ell if it is her legs or feet. I don't see anything visably wrong...
Only had chickens for 6 months now and only about 2 months into getting eggs. Wife just called me at work to say that there one of our Amerucanas had a bit of a bloody egg and her backside has some bloody feathers. Any idea of what I can do, her temperment seems normal.
We are 6 days into having backyard chickens. We got 10 each 10 week old birds. They were all together in the same pen when we got them. I have a 5'x6' coop with a 8'x16' run. I built them a roost tack in the run and roost pole in the coop. I have 3 birds that won't go into the coop at night...
We have a garden right next to their coop/run and they love squash, cukes and corn. Their run gets littered with ends of vege's, cobbs and stuff. How does one keep it cleaner? I was thinking of a new cat litter box and only putting their goodies in there from now on.
We are officially 5 days into having backyard chickens and loving it. Question, their run is 8'x16' and the floor is dirt and gravel. Although it is covered with sun shade material it is exposed to the elements. What is the best way to keep their run clean? I've heard using straw or pine...
I just got 10 week old chicks, although it being warm here in Virginia I've heard mixed signals about having some sort of light in the coop for them at night. I heard it add to their sence of security. thoughts?
Build what I thought was a good coop (4x6 and 4' tall. I have good vents (4"x10") and a large door going out into their run. My wife ways all coops she sees have windows in them. Do I need to add some windows?
Getting first round of chickens this weekend....Rhode Island, Ameraucana and Blue Marans (3 of each). All are 10 weeks old, will they play well together or do I need to look at different breeds. Thanks
Getting first round of birds this weekend...finally. Getting 10 week old chicks and they will be in an enclosed pen outsider with a large coop. We don't have many but 1 sighting for a black snake is to many for me. How worried should I be and what precautions can I do? thanks
Will be getting our first round of chickens this weekend and have to many options. Can I get some recommendations? I've met some great people that have helped me through all my petty questions and issues but I'm at teh final stages. I can seem to find people with 5-9 month old hens as they...
I've been told that since the droppings are so acidic that you need to line the floor and up the side walls a few inches with a roofing type tar? I am using pressure treated plywood but do any of you recommend lining the floow with anything?
