    "Scab" on nose and beak

About a month ago, I introduced 3 new hens to my flock. They are older hens, about a year and a half, and mine are still under a year. The pecking order ensued and everything has mostly calmed down at this point. One of my girls had part of her comb ripped off (used neosporin type stuff on it)...

    Duck food

So, I've been feeding my ducks (4 Pekin) the Dumor feed from TSC. I then switched to Nutrena Country Feeds because that what our local "non big box" feed place has. (My husband and I like to support local businesses whenever possible, and it didn't hurt that it was a dollar less expensive for...

    Pekin nest with eggs?

I have 4 Pekin... 3 ducks and a drake. I got 2 of the birds from TSC when they were having their chick days earlier this year. The other 2 I traded for because I had 2 mallard drakes. Well, the 2 that I traded for were a little older, and had already started laying. They laid for a few days and...

Q about Penicillin for a duck with bumblefoot

So, I got these 2 new Pekin females from a breeder in our area. I only went with him because some others had told me that they had really good experience with him. When I get there, the chicken enclosures look decent, but the duck enclosure was HORRENDOUS!! It was a decent size, and there were...

New duck with bumblefoot?? Please help!!

So, back at the beginning of April, we got 4 ducks. 2 Pekin, and 2 Mallard. I loved my little mallard ducks. They were so beautiful with their just turning green heads. But alas, I knew that if I kept 1 girl with 3 boys, that I would soon have a very big problem. I am part of a local...

    How many per??

So, we have 4 ducks. I was HOPING that we would get lucky and have 2 males and 2 females. No such luck!! We got 1 female and 3 males. :-/ We built an 8'x24' enclosure, and are in the process of getting a better duck house built (probably about 4x4 or so). I'm trying to simply trade...

    Introducing new chicks

I'm sure this has been covered 1001 times, but, I've got questions! I have 3 2 week old Easter Eggers, and I have 5 Buckeye chicks coming (due to be hatched on 18June) that should be here by 21 June. So, that would mean my EEs would be a little over 3 weeks when the Buckeyes get here...

    Mallard bill color

So, I know that male mallards bills change to the bright yellow like a Pekin duck... but at what age do they start changing? My mallards are about 5 weeks old (ish...) and are still peeping, not quacking, but one of my pekins is quacking and is a week ounger thanmy mallards. I'm trying to...

    Am I in trouble?

So, we bougt 4 ducks a month ago. 2 mallards and 2 pekin. Only one of them has started quacking, the other 3 still peep, also, I swear it looks like one of the mallards has a green sheen to its head! If one of the mallards is a male I'm okay with that, but, we only want 1 male! Do you think...

    I'm confused!

So, I have been doing a lot of research on coops because we will be building one soon. (We only have ducks right now). I've been looking at pre-built coops that you can buy at places like My Pet Chicken, and other places. I want our coop to be big enough for around 8 chickens. We're planning on...

    Introducing chickens to ducks?

Okay, so on Monday we are ordering our chicks for a 01June delivery. Which means that they won't be really ready for being released in with the ducks until around the beginning of July or so. (If I'm wrong, please correct me!) I was thinking that since the ducks will already be about 3 months...

    Ducks(and chickens) & roses

So, we're getting the final touches in for our duck/chicken enclosure (that will only have ducks in it until around July/August). I want to plant some flowers and such around the outside. If I planted climbing roses, would they harm the ducks/chickens if they ate them? What about honeysuckle...

    when to put outside?

So, we got our 2 mallards on 31March, so they are roughly 4 weeks old now. They are starting to gettheir feathers in really nicely. Their tummies are complete up to about their necks, part of their backs and sides, and it seems thir wing feathers. We got 2 pekin on 04April (if I remember right)...

    Confused about duck/chicken run

So... I asked in the chicken section and kinda asked here as well... and I'm kinda really confused. My idea for a chicken/duck enclosure is to make it 8'x24' with a chicken coop and duck houses at one end (farthest from the garden) and a shallow (1-2') long stock tank with a "deck" on the...

    New duck owners! Wooohooo!

So, the end of March,my husband, kids, and myself go to TSC to get some dog food and compost for the garden. Apparently that was the biggest mistake of all... lol My daughter fell in love with the little Rouen ducklings they had in the store. She actually started crying in the middle of the...

Run design for ducks & chickens

So, I'm new to fowl. I did have a duck once... but... it was an indoor duck. (Don't ask... LOL) We have 4 ducklings now. 2 Rouen and 2 Pekin. We are planning on getting 6-8 Easter Eggers in a couple of months. We are getting ready to build our coop & run(s) now. But I'm running into some...

    Coopless??

So, I went to a meeting with our Urban Gardening group from church, and we went to one of the peoples houses to see their set-up. I have a question about it. They built really nice enclosures. One side was the back side of a 6' wooden fence. They then completely enclosed it and didn't have a...

    Coop planning

So, my husband and I are planning a coop. We've decided we want about 6 chickens. Do you think that a 4'x8' coop with (hopefully) an 8x8 run would be big enough for 6 chickens? Or should I go bigger?

Howdy from the Crystal Coast of NC!

So, after much much MUCH thought, and talking with out neighbors, we have decided that we are going to take the plunge into chickens! When we bought our house (almost) 3 years ago, we were actually looking for a little bit of land to have a very small farmette (small garden, few chickens, and...

    Coop design

So, I found this and I was wondering how hard it would be to recreate? I think I would want to put more vents on the top, but, overall I think it would be a rather inexpensive way to get a coop together. I just am not exactly sure how we would put it together. Any ideas?
