    Nesting box straight to fridge, good or bad idea?

    We usually take the eggs after they are laid and put them directly in the fridge, sometimes while they are still warm. Should we wait until they are room temperature? We have noticed that the shells are really tough to crack, is this because we refrigerate too soon or too much oyster shells...

    The $300 egg!

    We got our first egg today! She never "squatted" and only sang the "chicken song" once! The one thing she did do was moved the hay around in her nest, she created a "hole" about 1 foot in diameter out of the hay.

    Do combs continually change colors?

    Sometimes my BO's combs are bright red and other times they look more pink! Is it possible they change colors during the course of a day? Does that dictate their mood? They have not begun to lay yet.

    Does anyone understand chicken talk? By this I mean, do chickens make different sounds for different reasons? Like a cat or dog? You can usually tell whats going on with your pet based on how they are vocalizing.

    I have 2 buff orpingtons whose combs are just beginning to come in. Is that any indication as to when they will start laying? I'm not sure how old they are. They don't have their wattles either. Do both of these have to be fully developed before they start to lay?

    dirt bath!

    Saw my pullets take a dirt bath today! This was after she dug a hole and sat in it for awhile. It was so funny! She was rolling around in the dirt and rubbing her head in it! I never knew chickens laid down on their sides until today!
