We usually take the eggs after they are laid and put them directly in the fridge, sometimes while they are still warm. Should we wait until they are room temperature? We have noticed that the shells are really tough to crack, is this because we refrigerate too soon or too much oyster shells...
My 2 BO's starting laying a few weeks ago and two days in a row I found an egg that was wet, seemed to have some type of watery substance on it, is this normal?
I have 2 BO's who free range during the day and they are tearing my flower beds up! They are constantly"scratching" and have dug large holes all over the yard. I love that they are free range but have no idea if its even possible to keep them from tearing up my plants and yard.......any...
We got our first egg today! She never "squatted" and only sang the "chicken song" once! The one thing she did do was moved the hay around in her nest, she created a "hole" about 1 foot in diameter out of the hay.
Sometimes my BO's combs are bright red and other times they look more pink! Is it possible they change colors during the course of a day? Does that dictate their mood? They have not begun to lay yet.
Was late getting the girls out of the coop this morning, could hear them "clucking" before I opened the ramp, well when they got out in the yard they raised cane for about 15 minutes! They were "balking and clucking" and wouldn't shut up! I threw some dry meal worms down to quiet them up and...
I have 2 BO who I believe are getting ready to lay, combs are getting redder and I believe they are around 24 weeks old. My questions are:
They free range all day now, is that going to affect where they lay their eggs? Think they will start laying in the yard or will they go to their nesting...
I have 2 BO's and I'm not sure how old they are. They are starting to sprout black tipped feathers on their rear end. They have been roosting at night in their coop but for the past couple nights, they have been getting in their nesting boxes. Could this be a sign they are getting ready to...
Does anyone understand chicken talk? By this I mean, do chickens make different sounds for different reasons? Like a cat or dog? You can usually tell whats going on with your pet based on how they are vocalizing.
My 2 BO pullets (still not laying...sigh) had not been able to free range for 2 days due to bad weather. Up until this point, their poop had been mainly solid, darker color and white, dries hard. Today in the poop tray it was a lighter brown, moist and loose. Should I be concerned or do you...
Today it was pouring down rain and my BF tried to get the chickens in the coop and they were not the least bit interested! The rain did not bother them at all! Can they get sick from getting wet?
I have 2 buff orpingtons whose combs are just beginning to come in. Is that any indication as to when they will start laying? I'm not sure how old they are. They don't have their wattles either. Do both of these have to be fully developed before they start to lay?
Saw my pullets take a dirt bath today! This was after she dug a hole and sat in it for awhile. It was so funny! She was rolling around in the dirt and rubbing her head in it! I never knew chickens laid down on their sides until today!
My 2 buff orpingtons are just starting to get their combs, little nubs....do they have to be fully developed before they begin laying? What is "squatting"?
I was sitting on my back deck watching my 2 girls and they did this dance where they ran towards one another, fluffed all up and bumped chests! What the heck did I witness? They have not started laying eggs yet.......sigh.......
Two weeks ago I got 2 Buff Orpingtons, one is really friendly, eats out of my hand etc! The other one is alittle skittish, I try to hold her every night before they go to bed. Is there anything else I should be doing to get her out of her shell?
We will be going out of town for a week the end of October, we have had our 2 BO's for 10 days and they are getting pretty comfortable with us. I believe them to be about 4 months old, no eggs yet. My concern is this, we have been letting them free range all day, they go in the coop to roost at...
