New Coop with Rollout Nest Boxes

After a month of trying to convince my husband and son to build some roll out nest boxes, I finally went back to Cael Kendall at Laughing Chickens (www.laughingchickens.com) in Mill Valley, CA to get help. He was super helpful and modified his coop to custom design some roll away nest boxes for...

Time in Time out of Coop and Predators

With the long days, my chickens have been spending their evenings until 7:30pm or 8pm out in the chicken yard. And then they start making noise (too much noise for the neighbors I fear) around 5:45am, so I let them out. Someone told me I shouldn't let them out that early because of foxes. I...

    Egg Eater

I've finally identified the egg eater in my flock. My 8 month Australorp who has gotten so efficient that I can't get any uncracked eggs anymore. I think the others are following suit. I only hav 3 egg layers right now (and one is isolated due to an illness). I'm not planning on culling...

    SICK CHICKEN: Eye closed

I found my Welsummer, about 8 months, in the corner of the chicken run. When I came with food, she was not interested - as she always is. I gave her a look and her left eye is closed and she seems confused. No swelling or blood or puss evident. What to do? I have 2 other 8 month old hens...

Introduce 5 week old chicks to adults exposed to Mareks?

Last September, I purchased my first four chicks. At five weeks of age, my naked neck died - did necropsy and turns out she died of Mareks. My remaining three hens have not shown any Marek's symptoms and are now healthy egglaying adults. I've been thinking about expanding the flock. Found...

When to switch from medicated starter

My three month chicks are still eating their Purina starter. The large bag us still 1/3 full, but I'm thinking it may be time to switch to organic feed. They've been outside three weeks or so. Any guidance? And what to feed next?

    Gophers

The chicken coop is under siege. I'm pretty sure it's gophers. The coop with run has a hardware cloth flooring, so the gophers aren't getting in, but everyday there's a new hole where the sand floor used to be. Any ideas how to get rid if the critters? Thanks!

UPDATE: Does Mareks diagnosis mean end of raising chickens? (Post 22: The remaining hens are ok!)

Just informed that preliminary results show my 5 week chick died of Mareks. Was instructed to clean, close flock, take care of existing three chickens until they die. After that not to introduce any new chickens to property for two years. Jumped into this chicken raising thing head first not...

    First night in coop

Two of the chicks turn 6 weeks and one of the chicks turns 7 weeks tomorrow. I have them out in their locked up coop for their first night outside. They've been sleeping without a red lamp for two nights now in their brooder. They were peeping like they were a little scared at first, but now...

    Chicks won't eat scraps

My almost 6 week chicks love their Purina starter feed and scratch, but they won't go for anything else. I've tried meal worms, spinach, scrambled eggs, apples, yogurt, oatmeal and cooked carrots. Do they need to eat fresh food for their health? Any recommendations on how to get them to try...

    Light in Coop

My ladies are 5 and 1/2 weeks old and almost ready to move outside in their coop. They've been spending the days in their coop and run, but I bring them back into the house at night to sleep. Plan is to transfer them to the coop sometime in the next week. One is completely feathered out and...

    Chick Pecks my Eyeballs

My Australorp keeps pecking my eyeballs when sitting on my shoulders. Is she just curious or is this a pecking order thing? She's usually quite calm and broody when she does this, not angry or aggressive. Just don't want to be naive if she's intentionally hurting me. And, yes, it does hurt!

Oh no, I think it's Mareks

I've spent the last couple of days treating my chick who stopped walking for a vitamin deficiency. Talked to a chicken doctor who thought most likely it's Mareks. Read up on the disease and symptoms do seem to match, as the chick does seem to have paralysis in the legs. She was supposedly...

    Chick struggling with walking

My 4 week naked neck just started having issues walking this past week. I've been putting the girls on the hardwood floor since they were a week, just to have some roaming time outside the brooder. This past few days, I've noticed that Oz (the naked neck) is having problems getting secure...

New Brooder from Hanging Wardrobe Box

I had to share my new brooder. My 4 and 3 week chicks were outgrowing their rubbermaid container and they were getting the brooder litter in their water and food faster than I could clean. I had to find a new solution. Went into my garage and located a wardrobe box, which came with a roosting...
