    Rooster's days are numbered!!!

My silkies are the exact same way. I thought I was bad as a teen but these guys are nonstop. Either they're fighting with each other or literally chasing tail. They are even the smallest birds in my flock and still get away with it.

    Feathers growing back?

I had a hen and a pullet literally skinned on their back and chest by my dog and they are both growing feathers back and almost can't tell they were injured at all. I'm amazed at how well chickens recover so superbly from physical injuries but yet weird little coughs and colds can put them down

Have you ever seen an egg like this

I'm fairly new to chickens but I've become obsessed and I read any book I can find on them. I would recommend the pepper treatment to her food. It'll make her drink more water and if you gave her an electrolyte powder mixed with the water it should really perk her up. It may do nothing at all to...

Rooster-infested- with Lice(?), to bathe or not to bathe?!

I just noticed my flock had mites and I tried DE and sevin dust to no avail. What worked for me on every single bird was Permethrin-10. I mixed a bath of warm water a tad stronger than instructed 1.5oz/6gal water and dunked all of my birds and put them in their coop one by one after spraying it...

    Blu-Kote question

I have a hen that was mated with so frequently that she lost most the feathers on her back and head and one of my large roosters mounted her one time too many and pretty much skinned her back down to the lower portion of her side. I brought her inside and monitored her for a few days and also...

    oyster shells

The feed store here is the one doing the price gouging. A 6lb tub of DE is $12 but TSC has a 20lb bag for $10.

    Americauna squeaks/purrs with every inhale/exhale

She seems fine as far as interacting with the other adults and eats and drinks just as greedily as the normal breathing birds but I can't help but wonder and worry if something is wrong. She doesn't have swollen sinus cavities or runny eyes and nose, just the squeaking and purring noises...

Look what I found in my coop tonight!!!!

It's times like that when I'm very thankful for sharp tools and hot lead. I can understand about being humane but if all I have in my hand at the time is a pitchfork then I'm gonna poke first and ask questions later. I've heard the argument that the predators are only going off of their...

    beautiful pic inside!!

Looks almost exactly like the eggs I got yesterday. Yesterday was my birthday and 3 more hens started laying for me and one was an americauna. I was so excited when I saw my lil squatty white cochin bantam sitting in the nest box that i almost scared her when I laughed from excitement when I saw...

Found a super cute coop at lowes today!

Also, the only time my free range chickens use the coop is to lay eggs or to sleep. They don't stay locked up 24/7. When it's dark all the birds are docile and pretty much care free. With the double stacked nests and ground space they are all happy/content with the sleeping arrangements. The...

Found a super cute coop at lowes today!

I have 33 chickens and if I put them all in the nests they would all fit comfortably but I also have roosts across the center. So there is more than enough room imo between nest boxes, community nests, the ground where some sleep regardless, and the ladder roosts.

Found a super cute coop at lowes today!

I have one of all my chicken storage areas and you can get the general idea of the size but it's just not a finished pic of the one I built. If you want to explain how to upload pics I'll do that or pm me and I'll text it to you or post it on my fb profile pic and you can look...or would it be...

Found a super cute coop at lowes today!

I bought twelve sheets of plywood and 20 2x4s for about $225 and they almost fit together perfectly without too much cutting. Turned out to be an 8x8 coop which is 8 feet tall and more than enough room for any two people to lay in comfortably so I fit two rows of nests stacked on top of each...
