Daddy! I want an Oompa-Loompa! Now!

There must be something in the air lol. I just ordered a dozen gold laced cochins and a half dozen australorps from Ideal. I went from 300 birds to 23 in 3 months cause i had my grandbaby so much that i was going nuts trying to keep all my breeders feed, watered and free ranged and keep up...

Okies in the BYC The Original

Quote: Different owners for the Harrah auction? I would *love* to see a good auction in Harrah. Im 5 miles from the Prague auction and i love it but i can usually only go on Sat and most of the best birds sell on fridays sigh.

So far everyones doing good here despite the heat. I let everyone out to free range by mid morning and i think that helps since they can find deep shade under the porch and at the edge of the woods. It looks pretty funny under the porch by mid afternoon with dogs, cats and chickens all laying...

    Relocate or Retaliate?

We trapped and killed 14 coons in 2 months that were hell bent on eating my call ducks despite a duck pen dubbed fort ducks..and they managed to get most of them too sigh. Then we bought two livestock guardian dogs. Never had another coon attack. Did lose a few chickens to the dogs as pups...

    Yes, another goat question

Quote: I have 50 acres and mine are always on the porch too lol. I think goats just like porches! I agree though that a half acre is pretty small to keep goats on.

How many chances do you give a hatchery ?? When is it enough??

Ive ordered from Ideal a lot. I typically order chicks from them 2-3 times a year. I have never had a problem. They've never charged my credit card early..usually not until right before they ship..sometimes i have them by the time the charge shows up on my account. I think *all* the hatcheries...

Does everyone here kill their chickens after they stop producing eggs?

I dont have any problems eating extra roosters but i get attached to my laying hens. I cant afford to feed nonproductive hens so my solution has been to sell all my laying hens at 2 years when they still are laying well. Someone else gets good laying hens cheap..and with that the decision of...

Okies in the BYC The Original

Quote: Next Prague auction is Sept. Not sure of the date yet but usually the 3rd weekend of the month. Im planning on taking my call ducks and whole bunch of chickens. Ive just decided that i dont want to take care of anything this winter but my little flock of australorps and my guineas.

I am sick of my dogs killing chickens

Quote: Caging them next to the coop would just make them worse..thats like putting cookie jar next to a kids bed and telling them to go to sleep instead of eating a cookie. Tying it around their neck very rarely works. What else have you tried so i wont repeat anything. What kind of dogs...

    He saved hubby's life!!!

We had this happen to us a couple of years ago too. Fortunately for us the wheel came off as we started to pull away from the toll booth so we were going really slow. Only one lugnut was still on the wheel so we think that someone had tried to steel the wheel/tire and we'd interrupted them...

Do you eat the ones you love?

I dont eat my laying hens. I sell them at around 2 and replace them with younger hens. Our extra roos get eaten. Most of our chickens arent pets. Most of the animals arent pets. The key is to not name anything your going to eat..or in the case of our lambs the ram lambs get named lambchop1...

    Need advice on wethering

I band mine but i band waay younger than that. I think at that age, esp if hes a pet, id go with a vet castration. At 5 months they are pretty big..bigger than a calfs at the age they are banded.

    I am absolutey heartbroken.

Im sorry you lost your girls. It always hurts. I would suspect the dog since theres the hole under the fence. The dog could have scared them to death chasing them. That happens sometimes and might be what cause the scratches. Dogs often dont eat what they kill while wild predators typically do.

    Cat!!!

Since the cats not even a feral cat i doubt that you have to worry about it. I have cats around my chickens..and they never bother them. I dont trust them around tiny chicks with no mothers but unless they are a bantam breed at 3 months yours should be pretty big. If in doubt wait til they are...

    Bad Day Today.

Hang in there..as long as shes drinking thats a good thing! Whats the suppliment? Something nutritional? Have you tried tempting her with things like low sodium chick stock? Sometimes they just stop being hungry and as soon as you can convince them to eat something..anything..then the hungry...

Questions About Raw Meat Diet for Dogs

My dogs eat older rooster bones with no problems at all. I probably wouldnt start a dog new to RAW out on old roosters but once they are used to eating RAW they chew instead of swallow. My laying bred roosters get really tough as they get older. The breast meat has a wonderful flavor so i skin...

    i think i need a dog--what breed is best?

Quote: Cool! Whose his breeder? I absolutely *adore* my English Shepherds. They have been bred for generations to be great all around farm dogs. That said, of course, for any dog to be useful on the farm and good around the livestock takes time and training. Until i got my dogs i lost...

    i think i need a dog--what breed is best?

My english shepherds are out with the chickens all the time unsupervised. That said..its not so much the breed of dog you get but the time that you spend teaching them that the chickens are YOURS and to be protected NOT harrassed.
