Teenage Orpington Roo - Southern CA

I've got a teenage Orpington I picked up from my local feed store that turned out to be a roo. So far he seems a good boy, he tid bits to his girls, he keeps his eyes on the sky while they are out foraging. I'm not certain I want to rehome him, but I already have a resident rooster and not sure...

2 yo Easter Egger Rooster Rehoming

Bakersfield, CA I have a 2yo easter Egger Rooster up for a good home that won't eat him. He had a vitamin deficiency when he was growing up and has a little gimp, but he's a good boy. My girls are having health issues and he is a little overzealous with them. Too few hens for him, and I have...

6 month old hens, Odd behavior

Sounds to me like they are squatting. It's a submissive behavior done to the "rooster" to allow for mating. This means your girls are getting ready to lay, or are laying. I usually pat their rump or shake their tails. They shake off and run about their business. haha

Free Easter Egger-Lays Light Green Eggs-Orange County CA pick up

She is a beauty!!! If I didn't already have 7 gals, I'd swoop her up in a heartbeat. However, I just thought I'd ask something I'm sure you've already read on here. Have you tried knocking her down in the pecking order? Separate her for a while from the one she is bullying, even put pinless...

Coccidiosis and Worms... What to treat first?

Alrighty, I'm going to treat her for 3 days with Corid and will treat for the tapes with Valbazen when it comes in the mail. I finally dug up the info my vet provided for the Panacur, it was 50mg/kg, treat once, wait a week and retreat. Is Valbazen the same?

Coccidiosis and Worms... What to treat first?

Well as much as I can get her to hold still on the scale, she's between 3 lb, 5oz and 4 lb. as far as her water, I guess I can, but she's in my guest bath, and her water bowl is only about a cup of water. The math you gave, is that to be added to the water? Even if it's only a cup? Or is that...

Coccidiosis and Worms... What to treat first?

@Casportpony If I want to treat the Corid directly to the hen and not in the water, do you know the correct dose and timing? I've heard 0.2mL per 2.2lb of bird, retreat in 3 days time?

Coccidiosis and Worms... What to treat first?

Yeah, it was mL, not mg, good catch. Thanks for all the help. I have to wait until the Valbazen gets here and I am going to retreat her. Until then I am going to give her some probiotics and a small drug break. I may try Valbazen and Corid at the same time, because it down pour rained a week...

Coccidiosis and Worms... What to treat first?

You're saying dose Panacur 1/4mL PER DAY, for 5 days straight? I think my vet said 0.2mg/kg treated once and then retreat in a week. Am I under-dosing? I still need to address the rhabditiforms. Will the Valbazen catch those, or is it tapeworms only? Since I already purchased the Valbazen, I'll...

Coccidiosis and Worms... What to treat first?

I recently acquired a new hen and have her in quarantine. I did a fecal float to the results that she has Coccidia oocysts, tapeworm eggs, and rhabditiform larva. I'm finishing up a 2 week treatment with Panacur, hopefully to eliminate the rhabditiform. It also seems to be irritating the...

How do I get blinders with pins of please help ??????????

Hey, sorry for the delay in response. Did you get them off? Using two people, one holds the hen firmly so they don't shake their heads, the second needs to place each pointed end of the snap pliers on the inside of the peepers near their nostrils (where the little pins go into their nose hose)...

How do I get blinders with pins of please help ??????????

Those are pinless peepers, meant to stop bad behaviors such as bullying, picking feathers, etc. They don't hurt them. I put them on my new girl who was quite the bully for about 2 weeks to break her of the bad habit, then removed them. You can remove them with a set of snap-ring pliers from your...

    Desert chickens, will need coolness!

Hey!!! Nice to finally find a local to me, I live in Taft. Where in Bakersfield are you, because I know city limits don't allow chickens? Not that it ever stops anyone. haha I also go to Cal City off and on for the off-road races they host up there. Do we have a local get together for chickens...

    Desert chickens, will need coolness!

I've got a handful of mutts. Five easter eggers and two red sex linked/red star/red ones... whatever people want to call them (they aren't RIRs). My garage isn't insulated, so I'm not sure why the previous owners ducted the garage with the cooler, not exactly energy efficient, however, it does...

    Desert chickens, will need coolness!

There are plenty of great responses on here in regards to high heat. :) I live in Kern County, CA... I'd like to say it's also as hot as the surface of the sun. Summer outside temps usually hover at 100-110 during the summer. I have an outdoor thermometer in their coop to monitor conditions...

French Black Copper Maran Rooster- Southern California

    Soft Shell Advice Sought

She spent the night in my bathroom, last night crop was full, this morning it had a small quarter round spot that felt like a soft boiled egg. Her bottom is no longer red an irritated, so that's one step in the right direction, but no egg. I also hate to see my water bill (steamed up the room...

    Soft Shell Advice Sought

Before the vet and humidity chamber, she looked hot and bothered. Stood in a small water puddle I made, eyes closed. Bum red and irritated. Other chickens are hot, but still foraging. After chamber, she laid a soft shell, back to normal, running around, bottom a pink color again. Today, back to...
