I'm wjreese's wife, and I have an update! All 4 chicks are alive and well. We moved the 2 hens and 4 chicks into a more spacious pen in the garage yesterday, and everyone seems to be doing well. Today the babies were eating and drinking.
This is so exciting!
Goats!
I know this isn't exactly a goat place, but I figured folks with chickens might know folks with goats-
I have a friend in West Cornwall who is looking to rent/borrow some goats to graze on their overgrown land.
Anyone know of anyone offering this service?
Thanks!
yes, I think I'm going to try that so they have a snack area-
I'm also looking for ideas for more shrub like plants that they won't eat, just to give them some "landscaping" so they aren't just in a big empty yard.
Hi Everyone!
We built a big fenced in chicken yard for our girls, and right now it's nice and grassy, but I expect that it will just be dirt in no time- I'd like to plant some shrubs/bushes for them to have some shade, and places to relax and hide. And for a little variety in the yard. Any...
Hi Everyone- we have a Wyandotte rooster- he is almost 9 weeks old. We are looking for a home for him. We are in Cobalt (between Portland & East Hampton). He is very handsome and sweet.

Hi Everyone!
I hear we are in for another cold spell-
My chickens did ok through the last one- but I was thinking of that camping trick, where you heat up a rock in a fire and then it stays warm for a few hours-
Would there be a reason not to do this, put a heated rock in the coop at...
Glad to hear that everyones chickens seem to be holding up pretty well in the cold. Ours are doing well- I was a little concerned one night, but when I went to close them in the coop, they weren't even huddled together, so I closed the doors, and hoped for the best.
Two have a tiny bit of...
Here is our haul from the last few days- one of our Americuanas started laying today- so now we have 4 out of 5 hens laying. (RSL, RIR, BR, and Ameracuana) - Yay! 3 of the chicks are still laying pullet eggs.
We have a yellow ball that you fill with treats- it has little holes in the ends, so as they roll it the treats come out. They LOVE it! It is about the size of a baseball, and I've seen them on line and we got ours at a feed store.
Seriously, they love this thing-
Our first egg was a double yolk. It was from our red sex link. We've used about 10 more since then and no more doubles.
She does lay huge eggs though. Is that normal? They don't fit in a regular carton.
Two others have started to lay, and we are getting some little pullet eggs. Can we eat them?
That's awesome!! I wish we had been around to see ours happen. My huisband had gone home at lunch to check, no egg. When he got home after work- EGG!!
We have just had the one egg so far, but Violet (who laid the first) was awfully noisy again this morning- so maybe when we get home we will...
I think we are getting an egg soon too!!! Our Gold Sex link is acting weird- very noisy, staying separate at night. And noisy! And her comb is red. We are so excited, we keep checking the coop- about 12 times a day.
And our Barred Rock is getting wattles and her comb is red too!!
