My only hen that still laying right now is a white leghorn that I rescued. She was looking really rough when I got her, and wasn't sure if she'd even live, but with loots of nurturing, she's happy, healthy and living the high life of daily free ranging.
All of my hens are molting heavily now...
I have an Ancona hen that's in the middle of a full molt.
She typically has a very large and very red comb that flops over like a leghorn hen's comb. Right now, she's otherwise very healthy and active, but her comb is getting smaller and smaller every day. It's also pinkish and not bright...
Just as the title says. I picked up their waterer to fill it about 5 minutes ago, and a huge black widow fell to the ground. It apparently crawled under overnight. We have so many of those here in Tennessee.
As soon as it hit the ground, my New Hampshire hen pounced on it and ate it.

I need to build a goat fence...a huge, 25 acre goat fence, and I'm not independently wealthy. The perimeter of the property has a 3-strand barbed wire fence that I may be able to modify.

Scaly Leg Mites...
I just read what seems like 1000 posts regarding using or not using WD-40 for Scaly Leg Mites.
I'm going to try it. For those of you who HAVE used it, do I just use it once and wait? When do I re-apply?
Thanks!
Well, my son named "her" Jeanette, but now, we're calling him Gene.
He was raised from birth, and I promised that he'd go to a good home and not become table food.
I'm willing to travel some to get to you. Two more pictures below...
Thanks!
Here's my situation...
We have 25 acres, 15 is in pasture. We haven't "set up home" there yet, but we will be living on site with goats, sheep, and of course chickens and other poultry.
In Middle Tennessee, we have coyotes (not as many as Texas, but they're here), annoying stray dogs, and all...
I have a beautiful, young Cayuga duck for sale.
This duck was hatched by my Australorp hen from an egg we had shipped from Florida. The parents of this bird are show quality.
I'm honestly not sure if it's a duck or drake. It's 2 1/2 months old and is losing the last of its baby fluff. It is...
I'm not sure how he did this, but his leg is swinging out the wrong way and he's moving around (as much as he can) on one foot and his knee.
Any advice?
Melbourne the Australorp is just a little over a year old, and she's had one heck of a life so far. About 6 months ago, she decided it was a good time to go broody, so I picked up a dozen mix breed fertile eggs from a neighbor...here's how it turned out.
Life was good until Mel was attacked...
and she's an absolute mess. Most of her feathers are gone and she looks pretty beat up, but her demeanor is pretty good and she seems healthy for the most part.
Except...her butt has this pasty substance on it and it smells like...woah! I don't really expect any of my hens' butts to smell...
I'd really like runner duck eggs, but if you have any heritage breed please let me know.
If you have any, please send me a total cost including shipping for 12 to Tennessee.
Thanks!
An old local guy I spoke with swears by this...if you want to keep water in your pond and not have it all seep into the ground, just keep ducks. Their poop seals the bottom of the pond and keeps water from seeping into the earth.
Can anyone substantiate this or is he nuts?
Thanks!
