    Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang! If I could get out there I would take them all in a heart beat, but my guess is someone is going to beat me out of that sweet, sweet deal.

A question for those who process their older birds...

I did grind up some of the meat from the ones we processed. Sauteed it with Hoisin sauce, finely chopped water chestnuts, and green onions and made lettuce wraps. They were FAN-TAS-TIC!

If I ever find some of these I would be happy to swap you if you wanted to meet half way. I am an hour north of Portland.

    Partridge Rock Thread

Did you get your eggs (the ones where you only got 2 or 3 chicks) from Horstman? I am really, really, REALLY wanting partridge rocks, but don't want to be disappointed. I am thinking maybe chicks... I don't know. I just want partridge rocks and they are almost impossible to find... they're...

Just a little whine.... Why can I not find Partridge Rocks for sale? Anyone have any they are willing to part with? Fertile eggs even? Day olds? Anything? I am pretty sure the universe is against me,

    Our first experience processing.

The first… WARNING THIS WILL BE GRAPHIC> While I encourage you to read on I will be describing in detail how we processed our chickens… Once that you've decided on a killing First you make a stone of your heart And if you find that your hands are still willing Then you can turn a murder into art...

Another couple of questions about the process of processing...

How long does it take for them to stiffen? Also, assuming I dunk them in hot water, how long does it take to pluck a bird?

A question for those who process their older birds...

I am pouring over a ton of vintage cook books from the 30's. 40's, 50's and 60's. I may have one even older that I need to dig up. I am planning on grinding up one of the two that we are most likely processing this weekend. I will let you know how the grinding works.

Another couple of questions about the process of processing...

Our plan was to start with two the first time out. Probably this weekend. We have the great advantage of having a spare fridge that is almost always empty. Being dog breeders/exhibitors we have a giant grooming sink that I am sure will come in handy. I am pretty much planning on having...

Another couple of questions about the process of processing...

Hi there - more questions... Approximately how long does it take a bird to bleed out? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? Longer? Say you have 3 cones and are processing a dozen birds. Can you bleed them out three at a time and then commence plucking once all of them are done (or at least the first 9)...

A question for those who process their older birds...

Thanks for the cooking advice Elke! I have some old cook books from the 40s I think that might have a good recipe or two. ;) This is my new mantra. I have read this several places and don't want to make that mistake!

A question for those who process their older birds...

We were gifted a large flock of older chickens as our first flock. They are not the breed we want, but they were free and we thought they would be a good "experiment" to make sure our space is safe and secure. They also offer instant gratification while our the breeds we want hatch. We also...

Chehalis Wa. Chicken lady. Older than dirt.

I'm on Oyler in Ethel. We have invisible chickens at the moment, LOL as in none yet. We plan on getting barred rocks though.

    Hi from Chicken n00b

Good to know. The stall has 8' (or maybe taller) walls on 3 1/2 sides, so it should be okay. The other 1/2 side goes to the grass paddock where the chickens can forage. Thanks all for the welcome!

    Hi from Chicken n00b

Hi there My name is Stephanie and we are about to get our first chickens! Yay! I have been "working" the husband for more than a year and we are finally in the process of converting a stall and a storage room in our barn to a coop. Our plan is for Plymouth Rocks and we're pretty excited...

Oyler? I think we're almost literally neighbors. I don't have chickens yet, we're converting a storage room and a stall from the barn into a chicken habitat.
