Moving chickens into new coop and run

Well, my everlasting project on the new chicken house is nearly completed - I started late last year but almost as soon as I started the weather turned and it just rained and rained and rained - then spring came and I was super busy at work - however i have been pecking away at it and before...

    Feathers everywhere

I notice a LOT of feathers on the ground in our chicken coop - yes, they are finishing moulting but there still seems to be a lot more feathers all over the place than I ever remember - the weather is turning here - could they be losing some more feathers to grow in more for the winter? Chickens...

Introducing baby chicks to older hens

What would happen if I introduced baby chicks to a group of 8 older hens (no rooster) - would they accept them or not? I would like to phase in the next generation as my hens are getting older but certainly do not want any chicks to suffer if they are not accepted. Thank you, Lee

    Coop width too narrow?

Well, I have the two frames up back and front - I constructed these on a 4x8 sheet so after framing I have 3ft 6inch width - this sure seems narrow compared to the old coop which is about 6ft wide - I have 8 older hens - I am concerned they will have a problem getting down from the perch - do...

    Roof pitch on chicken coop...

Quote: Thank you - well, my father in law has pictures of snow 5ft deep in old home movies from about 40 years ago but the most I have ever seen here in 18 years is about 2-3 ft at most.....I am going to put on a metal roof so hopefully any snow will slide right off. Lee

    Roof pitch on chicken coop...

OK, have to admit that I am NOT one of those guys who does well with construction - I can fix engines, tile, pretty much fix anything mechanical but when it comes to lumber I am awful - I cant cut two bits of wood the same length...so, please go easy on me! I am constructing a new chicken...

Remaining guinea pig food ok for chicken treat?

Kids have two guinea pigs - for information I signed up on a guinea pig site and was promptly chastised for not feeding them the right food - I guess the fancy stuff I bought from Wal Mart with all the corn, coloured bits of stuff etc is 'unsuitable' for guinea pigs - they might choke on it, it...

    Chicken Entertainment?

My father in law came up with hanging a corn cob (with corn on it) in the coop - they peck away at it and it swings around like a boxing punch bag so keeps them on their toes!!! Lee

    Chickens not laying

Maybe it is the heat as I have the same problem - its been extremely hot here in N CA and egg laying dropped off just as the heat wave hit......its cooling off now so will see if production increases.

Egg production way down and thin eggs

Thanks, I have been using layette and a product from wal mart - prior to this egg laying has been good with nice eggs (won first place for my tints at local fair this year) - so maybe it is the heat. Lee

Egg production way down and thin eggs

we have 7 hens which are about 2 years old now. From collecting 6 or 7 eggs a day we are down to 2-3 the white hen is still laying but have noticed her eggs have extremely thin shell. I add crushed oyster shell to feed they get kitchen scraps as well as scratch and they are let out now and...

    New roo - young Leghorn.

Well, after the loss of our roo to something last week I took the kids to a lady who has too many roos - we got a young Red Leghorn (at least that is what she said he was) an extremely attractive chap as well with beautiful plumage, calm demeanor and easy to handle. Going to wait until it is...

Introducing new rooster to flock question.

We lost our rooster recently and it just is not the same without one - I think the hens are at a loss as well - so, want to get a new young roo for them - I did get some advice about building a run, allowing them to be 'introduced' to allow them to get used to each other...problem is, I dont...

Something got our rooster today...daughter is distraught...

No dogs better come around our place for a long while whilst I am in this mood - it would get a beating like it never had before if I got hold of it. I am still upset about that - my daughters distraught cries and her scream of 'its not fair!' is still ringing in my ears.... Well, I think I am...

How many really wash eggs just before use?

Two comments: If the egg is thoroughly cooked to over 165 degrees you are going to be ok (and saute oil or hot butter for fried egg certainly is way over this) so I actually dont bother cleaning them much at all unless really caked with poop for asthetic reasons more than anything (obviously...

Something got our rooster today...daughter is distraught...

I can deal with it if it was a fox, coyote or other wild animal as that is the nature of things...if it was a dog (which I kinda think not as his body was deep in some very spiky and thick brush) and that dog comes around again.....not sure what I would do at this point. Lee
