I have a beautiful 20 weeks old Buff Orpington rooster that is free to a new home. He is mild mannered, very docile, not crowing yet. I need to rehome him as soon as possible. He is around 17 weeks old in this picture. I am in Napa, CA, which is in the north San Francisco bay area.
Yep - hens can crow. We had one...the white Delaware hen in my photo. She didn't do it all that often...but one morning she woke us up at 5:30am...crowing, still on her perch. That was too much so we gave her to a local farm that sometimes takes in homeless animals. Incidentally, we had 3...
Bears - so bad I get nervous two weeks before I go camping and then I have to take Nyquil and put earplugs in before I can sleep at night! We've had some run ins with bears while camping...most when we were away from the campsite thank goodness. BUT...one time years ago I was sleeping in the...
Hi everyone. Sadly, something is wrong with our hen, Della. I'm wondering if someone out there would recognize the symptoms.
Background: Her breed is Delaware, she's a little over a year old, the alpha hen, and crows sometimes.
Here's her symptoms:
1. Laying soft shelled eggs for the...
I live in Napa, CA and we've had problems with hawks. We have a big tree in our backyard, it is open other than that. Twice we've had a hawk (I think they were red tails) swoop in on our chickens while they were free ranging. I don't know if it happened more when we weren't looking! That...
This is funny: my husband went to the feed store yesterday to buy some scratch for the chickens and he mentioned to the ladies behind the counter that we had a crowing hen and did they have any advice on the subject, and they said "Oh, you're one of the lucky ones!" They weren't being...
Wow...thanks everyone for the input. It makes me feel better to know that other urban backyard chicken folks have crowing hens too.
The crowing seems to be Della's response to being cooped up in the girls' new run. She usually starts in after my husband lets them out into the run (they're...
Lurky, that's good advice. I've been thinking I should go talk to my neighbors. Unfortunately, the neighbors on either side speak Spanish, and I don't. If anyone could translate into Spanish "I'm sorry about the crowing in the morning, it's actually a hen, not a rooster. Please let us know...
Yeah, when we first got our girls, I remembering reading a little here on crowing hens and thinking, "oh wow...hope we don't get one of those!" Ha ha ha. I've tried all kinds of searching online about the subject, but really there's not much info about it! She doesn't have any other rooster...
Oh boy...Della's been crowing every morning now! The problem is, Della's a hen, not a rooster. Yes, I'm sure She's a laying Delaware hen, dominant of our three hens. We recently restricted the area our girls can free range in...and they are none to pleased...especially Della. My husband...
We just wanted chickens...that's all. As pets. My husband always had several at his house...in the hills of Hayward, CA, just rural enough to have chickens and goats. Now that we live in Napa and couldn't really find any rule that said we COULDN'T have chickens in the city...we have 3! I...
I only have one Delaware...so I don't have much experience with the breed...but our girl "Della" is the alpha hen of our bunch...she's quite vocal and aggressive, but also super curious and friendly. She's crowed a few times. She's been a pretty good egg layer. She's very pretty too! I love...
Ahhhh...we don't even have a fireplace in our house! I miss cozy fires...even though in our last house we'd only have them every once in a while, I miss them soooo much! It doesn't really get cold enough here to require heat all day, every day. We really only turn our gas wall heater on...
