I've been trying the go-it-slow method too. Chicks were raised inside (no broody hens available :( ) up until 6wks old and too big for my office. Then they got moved to a segregated portion of the main coop, with visibility to the Big Girls, but no physical contact. One of the chicks got out a...
I had no intentions of getting a Polish hen, but was sent one by accident. So she lives in a rainbow flock consisting of RIR, BO, BR, SS, SFH and GLW. She doesnt get picked on, but is the lowest on the totem pole and now that we are working on integrating 4 more to the flock, she is definitely...
Well, i just had my worst nightmare happen while trying to integrate. I have a flock of 7 hens that are 9 months old and 4 chicks that are 7 weeks old. 3 days ago I moved the chicks from their brooder they had outgrown to a sectioned off portion of the coop. This worked until today when one of...
x2! Definitely better selection, generally health (at time of arrival) guarantees, and gender guarantees. Of the 3 orders I got from MyPetChicken - 100% arrived alive and well, and 100% were female as ordered. There was 1 breed mix-up, but they offered either a free chick (of equal/lesser...
I completely agree! I can't imagine having a flock of only one or two breeds, the "rainbow" is just so pretty to look at! But I think it is the cause of my addition/chicken math problem - there are so many more breeds that I want to try, not to mention bantams!
I have had chickens for less than a year and decided, when getting into this, to try one each of several varieties to pick a favorite. So now, almost a year later, I have already added 4 more to my original group and have made some observations (read: picking favorites) on the breeds I...
Thank you! She looked like a gray chipmunk as a day old chick - so its been really interesting watching her change over the past few weeks. Trying to find pictures of other EE that looked like her at this age to get an idea of where she is going!
This forum is a fantastic resource!! Most folks will be happy to help you. Maybe you could let us know what you have prepared for your new chicks and we can help fill in the blanks?
Went out and got updated pics of the 4 Littles at 6 weeks old! Take lots of pictures, they grow so fast and its really neat to be able put up side by sides!
I have gotten all 11 of my chickens from MyPetChicken via their website as day old chicks. 100% of my chicks survived (without special supplements, just fresh clean water, chick feed, and an Ecoglow heat source rather than a heat lamp).Of the first group of 7 from last spring, 100% are hens, as...
I'm not completely new either, as I got my first group of 7 last spring(now nicknamed the Big Girls), but added 4 (the Littles) more 6 weeks ago - all from MyPetChicken. This second batch is completely different from the first and has made me feel like a newbie all over again! :) Raising in...
A few of my girls have recently starting laying, and I have identified (99% sure) the layers as my SS, BR and RIR. My BR has consistently been eggs like the laying the bottom egg in the pic (hard to see, but there are white speckles.) Top egg was the first laid by the RIR (and I'm 100% sure that...
I have a rainbow flock and am running into the same problem when searching egg colors online. Am finally getting 2 eggs a day that are different enough to assume they are from 2 different bird. Based off of behaviour, i am guessing my Speckled Sussex and Barred Rock? (Also have BO, RIR, GLW...
Got my first two eggs today! The white egg is store bought, for size comparison. I know one of them is from my 17wk old Speckled Sussex (she has been "squatting" for me the last several days) but the other is a mystery!
Can't wait to check again tomorrow to see if there are any more surprises!
My first flock of girls are getting so big! They are still living in the horse barn though - DH got tired of building the coop on his weekends home from out of state business, and my handyman hasn't been able to work us into his schedule yet... Definitely should have taken the advice to finish...
