Welcome, We are a small farm in Southern Maine. Raising our own food and loving the farm life. I have always lived on a farm and until recently always raised the broilers and Broad Breasted White turkeys for meat and had a few laying hens for eggs. Last year I decided to try and raise our...

    Southern Maine Bourbon Reds?

You are not far at all, I am on the NH line. If hatching goes well, I may sell. Right now I am just starting and am only keeping my tom and hen. This year was a trial for me, my goal was for the tom and hen to raise them naturally, all went well, but it was a late start. I purchased my tom...

    Turkeys raising other birds?

I love it, does the cover open? My hens do a better job at hatching. I have no luck at all with the incubator. I was very impressed with the turkeys this year and their parenting. It was the first for both and they were marvelous. Loved watching them interact with each other and teach the...

    Turkeys raising other birds?

My very broody hen hatched 2 Bourbon Red and 1 BR/royal palm cross this summer. I also had my Bourbon Red pair hatch 5 at the same time. I tried to take the pure BR's from the hen and give them to the turkeys. They took them no problem, a few days later I let everyone out to free range and...

    Breeding meat chickens

I have raised the CX for many years, they are a very nice breasted bird and a quick grower. They don't like the heat and we have to be careful not to loose them just before they are table ready. All in all, a definite plus for a meat bird. Negative side is they are horrible foragers, they...

    Maine

I am in Sanford and know of a RIR Rooster if you are interested. Last year, I gave a friend some items to start her chicks and she thought she would be nice and order me a rooster. I didn't need one. She has 2 now and wants to get rid of them. She says they are dominant and fight and she is...

    Maine

Hi I am in southern Maine, I have never insulated, but do make sure it is draft free. The winds is what will chill them. I keep an eye on the chickens and make sure they are not getting too cold, if so, I would put heat source in for a short period of time (like getting through those windy...

So happy with 5 BR poults, new venture for me

I have them penned up while setting. My fault I lost the other babies, I was in between pens and was not locking them up at night. Now they are in every night. I was lucky with this hen, I brought eggs inside and put them in the incubator when she got off the nest. I had 1 hatch the next day...

    Boiled eggs don't peel

Your eggs are just fine, they are fresh. You said they started laying a week ago? The store eggs are older, older eggs peel better. Not sure if there is an exact timeframe, but I let mine set 2 weeks before boiling. I have an egg carton just for my boiling eggs and everyone knows not to eat them.

    washing eggs

I do not wash my eggs, except during mud season or when they are for someone else and than only if really needed. I was taught to never use soap and to use only water that is warmer than the egg. If they are real dirty, I use a facecloth while running under tap water, (water is warmer than egg)...
