How many people eat there chickens on this form

I have not had to make that decision yet, but it has always been a strong No Way will I eat an old layer. I feel that they worked too hard all their short lives to end up being chased down on their last day of life only to meet a cleaver. I will let them die of old age, however I would end...

My rooster and one Buff Orp hen died in my arms

I have determined in my mind that I must of drowned my two birds. Gilbert the rooster was not sick enuff to just collapse like he did. I must of pushed the liquid down his air sacs. Gilbert was a 1-1/2 year old Cukoo Maran who only a couple of weeks ago was digging up worms and instead of...

My rooster and one Buff Orp hen died in my arms

I wrote yesterday on another post about my young rooster and a hen sitting still and acting sick. They did not appear to have worms, mites and did not have very watery poop. I went to the feed store today and bought some antibiotics, and vitamins. They would not eat or drink so I put some in...

Rooster and chicken sitting in one spot w/failure to thrive

Well... there is no respiratory wheezing or stomach gurgling. They have never had a worm problem that I can tell. When we bought them a year or so ago they came dewormed by the owner. What can I buy for them to deworm them again in case that is the problem. It can't hurt right? Now that I...

Rooster and chicken sitting in one spot w/failure to thrive

We have a 1 1/2 year old rooster and a hen who are acting differently than the rest of the flock. They are sitting in one spot all days long, their feathers are rustled up around their necks. The rooster has quit crowing and they are lathargic. The appear to be sick and I am worried they have...

12 eggs one week, zero eggs one week later. Whatup?

Well we have 14 laying hens. They have been laying exactly for one year. A couple of them stopped only to begin again after a cycle of going broody. We had to change the design of the nests because one of the new pullets from the hens that went broody was pooping in the boxes at nite and then...

When do Chickens separate from their chicks?

My Cukoo Maran roo and his harem have managed to hatch some chickies. They all live together with the rest of the chickens in the coop. I did not do any kind of special brooding box. The two hens that went broody are taking great care of the chicks. They chicks are out with the general...

    Chickens laying on bad eggs

I have two chickens who were sitting on their eggs for 2 weeks or longer. They got locked out of the hen house by accident therefore allowing the eggs to get below temperture. They have been sitting for almost 4 weeks now and it is obvious those eggs are not going to hatch. Should I take...

My coop has turned into a maternity ward!

My Light Brahmas are going broody one by one. One two weeks ago, One last week, another this week, another today. The first one who went broody about two weeks ago had 18 eggs under her today. The other hens are laying their eggs in her box probably on top of her and the eggs are rolling down...

My roo is nesting and clucking. Why?

Okay... so my rooster sat in a nest and clucked for about one hour. The next day my first ever hen went broody on me in the same exact nest! She is still in there one week plus. Could the rooster possibly have trained her to do that?

What will my chickens look like?

I have a Light Brahma who is sitting on eight eggs. The eggs are from my four different chicken breeds to include, white leghorn, RIR, Buff Orpington and the Light brahma. What should I expect those chickens to look like? Do they turn out to look like mutts or do that take on the roos looks...

It must be that Broody time of the year cuz I need answers too.

Please forgive me for not taking the time to research my questions first. I know you BYC old timers must get tired of answering the same questions, but I just don't have the time this week and I need to know some chicken things regarding going broody. My chickens are one year old now. They...

My roo is nesting and clucking. Why?

I found my one year old Cookoo Maran Roo sitting in a hen's nest and clucking. I am wondering if this is something that they do. The hens have all been laying eggs since last Sept. so I doubt he was doing a demo for the girls on the basics of laying an egg. I found it to be strange behavior...

Dropped egg, chickens devoured, am I in trouble now?

My chickens had their first taste of egg. An egg dropped from the basket when one handedly trying to open the gate. It fell hard so completely broke, and then the chickens moved in for the eats. I am wondering if this is going to give them somekind of new love for the taste and cause them to...

    rub-a-dub-dub, chicken in a tub?

First of all my chickens do not like to be handled by humans. I have Light Brahmas and White Leghorns who are basically grey now cuz they are so dirty from the winter and now mud. I am wondering how to give them a bath. Do they like to get in a tub of water? or do chickens hate water?

    poop vs. lawn

I live in a very high eagle populated area and for this reason I cant let my chickens range freely. I am planning on building a chicken tractor and move them to a 1/2 acre lawn area. I am wondering what their poop will do to my lawn. Will it burn the grass. It is a nicely manucured lawn in...

    chicks lost in the mail

I can't help being disturbed about the fact that baby chicks which die during shipment suffer a miserable death. They are an innocent life that did not ask to be thrown in a box and then left to the elements and neglect by shipment through distance. I wish there was another way for us all.
