Yay Chicks! :
What I learned, through this thread, about being eggbound, is that you will see obvious distress. If she was acting normally and then she just keeled over, there is no way you could have known. Perhaps an egg could have broken internally?
Hmm, guess we would have to autopsy to...
Well, my DH will be glad that he doesn't have to go out to immediately insulate the coop in order to get me to quit fussing about this. He owes you one BeccaBOO! He says he is already freezing his butt off from attending a chicken funeral. So, sigh, we move on. I seem to have pacified my son by...
Thanks for the hugs. Do you think she was egg bound? And if so, is it more common in some breeds? We have a mixed breed flock but she was a Cuckoo Marans and we have two of her sisters. The rest of the girls are other breeds. But I wonder if there is something that I can watch for. I was reading...
Okay, I've only done this chicken thing for 11 months now and it's just killing me. I lost my roo for some mysterious reason and now one of our pullets, Hershey, was dead this morning curled into her nest box. She had just layed her first egg two days ago. It looked like she was trying to lay an...
Oh my goodness, SO very adorable! Where can I find a pair of Seramas for me?? I looked online and all the breeders that I found are in the UK...which is very ironic because I am currently sitting here in Burgess Hill, England on business. But I figure there is no way I could smuggle chickens...
The language I copied from the bill can be found at:

I want to be able to grow my own veggies, produce my own eggs (okay, I'll have my hens do that for me! ), and give and sell the extras. I've always dreamed of having one of those...
I consider myself fairly well-educated, but these bills are really difficult to understand. However, I plowed through the whole thing and found the following statements. They seems to specifically exempt those of us who would qualify as backyard chicken enthusiasts who sell eggs. Unless you are...
One of my older hens (over a year old) has laid two soft shelled eggs over the last year. The first time was when the neighbor's dog came over and was jumping against the fence barking at her . She just popped the egg out and ran for cover, poor thing. The other time I found a soft-shelled egg...
We started putting our trees up before Thanksgiving this year. My 13 year old protested loudly. But I've been traveling a lot for my job this last quarter and had to get it done or not be decorated at all. And I do LOVE to decorate for the holidays! I have a 6-foot pencil tree in the kitchen...
I went to let the flock out of the coop this morning and our rooster, Einstein, was dead! We don't know what happened...the girls are all fine and perky. I posted a couple weeks ago that the girls were pulling his crest feathers out, but that behavior had stopped and his feathers were all...
If you totally irradicate the coyote population, be ready to be overrun by rabbits and other rodents. My neighbor rid our area of the entire pack two years ago and we have never had so many rabbits and rodents. I haven't had a good producing garden since because of the rabbit overrun! My family...
Yay! Yippee! Woohoo! I am SO happy for you! I didn't get a chance to get out here to check status yesterday. But I thought of you the whole time I was scooping poo from our coop yesterday and just had to come check on you today. This was just the news I was hoping for! I love a happy ending!!
Could she have found a place to roost somewhere else in the yard after finding that she was locked out for the night? If the yard is fenced, I would think that she wouldn't have disappeared due to a four-legged animal passing buy. Being pessimistic, it could have been a predator from the air...
