    Chicken tractors and rain

No. Mine just congregate under the covered section. They're birds; they'll be fine.

Where to get cheap hardware cloth?

I got mine at Southern States. $95 for 100' x 3' of 1/2" hardware cloth. http://www.southernstates.com/catalog/c-659-hardware-cloth.aspx They had to order it, but there's no charge to ship to the store. Also, use an angle grinder to cut the hardware cloth. Just lay it on the ground and wear...

    Hardware Cloth - Any tips?

To cut the hardware cloth, i use an angle grinder. It works great. Wear gloves and eye protection- it throws quite a few sparks. For poultry staples (which i called 'horseshoe nails' growing up), i like to hammer the two points together until they are about parallel. I think they go in...

    Men's work - generation differences

My wife gladly proclaims "boy job" in any of the following circumstances: -it requires heavy lifting -it requires advanced handyman skills, or -it's gross

    Nest boxes in daytime tractor?

If my chickens are only in the tractor during the day, should i put nest boxes in there? Do they lay during the day? I'm having a feeling that this will strike people as a really stupid question.

    Re-purposed material - a lesson in recycling.

That was fantastic. The first post reminded me of...Thoreau? or something along those lines. The second, Monty Python.

first time coop...advice/help/ideas to build from exhisting shed

I have built about 40 coops...unfortunately, that's all done in my head. I'm starting on a similar project soon so i can tell you what i'm planning, based mostly on what people here have said. I'm closing everything up and covering all ventilation with 1/2" hardware cloth. To prevent...

    Materials

Yes to stores that get stuff on pallets. My friend runs a small business that sells snow plows, etc. He was so happy to get rid of pallets that he delivered them to my house. Maybe try your feed store? I believe that larger stores like Lowes reuse the pallets, but i would try smaller operations.

What age do you introduce a perch?

I just looked this up on this forum the other day. Some people say that they put it in at one week. Others put a roost in on day one, and the chicks can use it whenever. Most posters said they just use branches from outside. I checked because i found two of my 2 week old EEers on top of the...

    Coop and Daytime Tractor question

I was going to build a tractor with attached coop, and then use part of my shed as the coop in the winter. However, my sweet little wife would like to have the chickens in the shed during the night, and take the chickens from the coop to the tractor each morning and back each night. So the...

    Protecting my planned tractor/ark

I would use stain, like Thompson's. If you use paint, the paint will eventually get cracks, which will hold the water against the wood. With a sealant, the sealant soaks into the wood so you don't have that problem. Let us know how it turns out.

Something entered my coop last night!!!

Quote: You do what you like, but if i lived near that spot 7 miles away, i would not be very happy with you. Do be careful; they have many sharp teeth and a nasty disposition. Kill it and make its feet into earrings, then stew it up. Euell Gibbons says that all mammals are edible. When it...

Something entered my coop last night!!!

Quote: Use a shovel to dispatch it and bury it. Then reset the trap in case you have another pest. And someone mentioned it, but in case you missed it, a raccoon can fit through any hole it can get its head through. That means that a rather large coon can get through a small hole, like the...

salatin pen is both in one

No, i am not Joel Salatin. Someone said they didn't know who he was. I was merely stating facts. Whatever you think of him, he is something of a celebrity. There are people who do not like his model for various reasons (e.g. small pen size, raising Cornish X's instead of heritage birds)...

salatin pen is both in one

Joel Salatin has become something of a local food celebrity since he was featured in the documentary Food Inc. The chicken tractors he uses are for meat chickens. His layers have large, movable coops and free range during the day.

How to gently persuade someone to kill and eat pets?

When i was young, we had pigs. We were allowed to name them as long as the names were food related. We had Ice Cream Sandwich, Oreo, Doublestuff Oreo, Butterscotch, etc. However, i never really had an issue with eating them in the first place. I'm getting chickens in March, and my extremely...

    Sound insulation they won't eat

The egg cartons work by deflecting the sound in various directions, whereas a wall deflects it in only one. It works like the grey triangle-shaped soundproofing in music studios. If you cover it with plywood, then it won't work. Another way to soundproof something is by using mass. Sound...

    Whole Grains for chicks

I have read quite a bit about feeding whole grain to chickens, and even some on transitioning chickens to whole grains. But in the vastness of the internet, i have found only one reference to feeding whole grains to chicks (note to self, upgrade my google-fu). This was on the Greener Pastures...
