Yes, I have texting, so feel free! I have two kids on my plan, so I have unlimited texts... I'm not 'new' to chickens, maybe 'semi-new'?...we started our flock about a year ago as a boy scout project. We're in Raeford. Here's the rundown on our flock: Sex Link Rooster (at least I think he's...

TSC Chick 'rescue' didn't end well, anyone know why?

Losing babies is so hard...last year I brought home two 'freebies' from TSC as well. They had been trampled by their siblings I was told. But the symptoms were pretty much identical. Neither baby made it, though I've so far not had any other problems with babies other than the occasional...

    Prodigal Hen

Last year we started a flock with Sex-Links, Tetras, Brahmas and Bantams. We lost a few, but have had very good luck all around. A few weeks ago we picked up some new red babies (breed unknown at the moment, waiting for them to get bigger)...but we got a big surprise today. Back in January...

I Have Eggs!! - Now with pictures!

Here are some pics of the girls themselves...well, maybe one boy in there. Can anyone help me out here? The Brahmas. I figured they'd be stewing roosters...but at least one is a girl. The 'big girls' around the water cooler, gossiping I'm sure about the 'babies.' My one Bantam baby left...

I Have Eggs!! - Now with pictures!

I have a small flock of 5 black sex-links, 2 (straight run) Brahmas (white and black), 3 fawny colored Tetras and the 'baby' Bantam. The seven 'big girls' are five months old now and over the past three days I've found 7 eggs! I also found the shell of an eighth egg...not sure what happened...

    Injured Chick! Need suggestions!

Thanks. Yes the other one seems fine. She is eating, drinking and walking around. She does have some type of bruise on her head, but that didn't stop her and her sisters from eating two mashed egg yolks in record time. I was pretty sure when I first saw her that she wasn't going to make it...

    Injured Chick! Need suggestions!

I went to TSC today...probably my first mistake. I picked up six more babies and the lady asked if I would take two injured chicks that had been stampeded by their sisters. I agreed, much against my better judgement. Anyway, one chick seems to be ok...the other however, refuses to drink or...

NeeleysAVLChicks - How many do you have? I'd like to get a few more babies....and a drive to the mountains is never a bad thing. BellyDancer - I'm in Raeford too! My week old chicks are starting to show tailfeathers...and trying to escape! hehe They are SO curious.

    Next hurdle...the coop...ideas?

Yeah, my husband builds alot of stuff, so I'm familiar with '16" on center" and terms like that. We have roofing from our shed that is 10 - 12 feet long I think. Our shed has rows of the see-through plastic roofing in order to let light into it and Joe was contemplating using that for part of...

Bees! Awesome. I would love to have bees. But I don't see that happening. No one in the house even likes honey but me.

    Next hurdle...the coop...ideas?

Thanks! Though I currently feel totally overwhealmed...But...doing the math, for my potential 14 a coop of 8 x 7 or larger will work..and a run of 14 x 10 or something similar. Will have to go scope out the backyard and take some measurements. I will see about getting a plan worked up soon...

Thanks for the welcome! I felt prepared to get our first batch...even prepared to lose one or two. But, they are all healthy and happy at the one week point! Of course, at the rate my son drops his lizard's meal worms in the cage to watch them run, I think I will need to raise them too! Vinyl...

    Next hurdle...the coop...ideas?

Our babies are a week old today! Yay...now I need to figure out where they are going to live. I'm willing to take any advice you guys have to give! We have 6 black sex-linked pullets and 2 Brahma straight runs. They are pretty curious buggers...Anyway. We are contemplating getting up to 6...

    Our first chicks! Questions...

Thanks, guys. Our 'poopy butt' (as my son calls it) chick is better. The chicks were sleeping on the other side of the kennel...but I moved the light down a bit more and now they will sleep where ever, but more individually, so I guess that was the right call. I took them outside the other...
