Yay! We have babies! Some questions about turkeys nesting...

Our year old Narrangassett just hatched 15 poults and two ducklings. on Thursday. Everybody is doing fine so far. Wondering if it will be ok to leave the ducks in with their "mom" or should I seperate them? If so, when? She hasn't seemed to notice they look a litttle "different" than her other...

Goats with hair loss on face

Our four Boer does are all experiencing varying degrees of hair loss, restricted to their face & ears, most noticeably their muzzle. It does not seem to match up to the symptoms of ringworm, lice or mange. They do not seem to be itchy, not scratching it at all, but the area is apparently...

PLEASE READ THIS!!! help for duck with spinal injury?

We have a runner duck that was injured by a predator-not actually our duck, belongs to a friend who is on vacation, we are just caring for it. He was dragging his leg, and we thought it was broken, but when we couldnt find a break we took him to the vet. They noticed a small puncture wound on...

Before I do this...another dubbing frostbit wattle question....

Been reading the posts regarding this on here, but I am not 100% clear on when it is necessary to do it. Poor Axel, our rose comb brown leghorn has some seriously frostbit wattles. Despite vaseline, the -20 temps we have had here lately have been too much for them. The chickens have been kept...

Nifty device I found, thought I would share it with you....

Called a Thermocube. Cost about $15 at teh hardware store. Looks like an outlet "expander" one that makes a regular outlet hold extra plugs...except it has a thermostat built in to it. It cuts off power to anything plugged into it when the temp reaches 40 degrees- comes back on at 35. I am using...

Broody turkey? A few questions, please...

I have a 7 month old Narrangesset hen, presently bunking with some 4 mo olds-hens and toms. Last few days she has been acting kind of broody- nesting alot, making a weird noise- Is she getting ready to lay? If not, what age do they usually start? Do turkeys lay regularly, or do they only lay...

Who is laying the speckled eggs?

Getting 7-8 eggs a day now out of our 30 young hens- all varying shades of brown, save for the white egg laid by our sole leghorn- but on a few occasions, I have found a small brown speckled egg amidst the solids. I have Buff Orpingtons, Silver Wyandottes, Plymouth Partridge Rock, Barred Rock...

    Is my hen CRYING?

I have a 25 week old Silver Wyandotte hen that is making an awful, non-stop noise tonight. Sounds just like a cat yowling, only softer. It is constant and almost sounds like she is crying. I am worried she is in pain. I do not know if she has started laying yet-she is in with 35 others and I...

Anybody made a hat for their roos?

I know it sounds silly, but I am contemplating making some sort of comb/ wattle cover for a couple of the boys. I have a rose comb brown leghorn, Axel, who already appears to have frostbite on his enormous wattles-they have some black and white "burnt" looking areas on them-and it hasn't even...

First time in the snow, what a hoot!

My poor chickies! Today we got our first real snowfall- a good two inches was on the ground by the time I turned them outside to play. It was a decent day, low 30's and no wind, some sunshine, so I figured they would be fine. The temperatures were not an issue. BUT, the mad dash for the door...

Which is more cost-effective- heat lamp, tape or heated waterer base?

Gotta find a way to keep my four galvanized waterers from freezing. Was planning on heat lamps, but I read on here that would run me $30+ month for each one to operate!!! Is heat tape or the heated waterer bases any cheaper to use? PLEASE say yes!!!

The Rangers are DONE-10 wks.3 days!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Took 73 of the 90 Freedom Rangers in to be processed today-they were 10 weeks, 3 days. My scale wimped out two weeks ago- doesn't go over 7 lbs, so I dont know what the live weights were, but the dressed weight averaged 5 lbs. Had about 10 that were under 4 lbs, and had a few monsters that...

They Finally did it! Tell me they get bigger.....

Finall found THREE eggs this morning- no idea which of the 19 hens laid them, but woo hoo! They are 19-20 weeks, barred rocks, turkens, white Giants, speckled sussex & buff rocks-only thing, the eggs are really small, they look hysterical in our brand new jumbo egg cartons. I am hoping that...

Goofy goose, what IS she doing?!

We gave a friend a pair of our geese, one ran off, so they now have a lone goose, who has, in the last few days, taken to trying to hatch a bottle cap. She made a nest, pushed the bottle cap in there, and plopped down on it. Apparently she is taking very good care of it, but we are not...

To brine or not to brine...rangers...

Our Rangers have been free ranging 12 hours a day, and I don't want them to be tough. Do you recommend brining before roasting, and if so, how long, and what ratio of salt/ water?

New to plucking- help with the pin feather "goo"! PLEASE!!!

Ok, yesterday we did 14 roosters, plucked by hand- wasn't too bad. This is only our third time processing, and I am SO hoping there is a better way to get pin feathers...not even sure what these things are actually...the turkens in particular, at the end of their pin featehrs, have this black...

Once a chicken killer, always a chicken killer?

I keep seeing posts in support of the above sentiment, and it saddens me. I know, it is certainly very difficult to stop SOME dogs from killing chickens, but it is NOT impossible. In the hopes that maybe one person might give rehabilitation a try before they SSS, I post this picute, taken this...

Once and for all, a pictorial pro/con list of raising chickens....

Pro Pro Pro Pro Double-yolked Pro! Super big Pro Con I keep seeing posts asking is it cost effective, can I actually save any SIGNIFICANT amount of money.....ummm, maybe some can, but for most, I doubt it. I try not to keep too close of track or I might be depressed! But, can...

They were 9 weeks on Wednesday, and in line with the promise I made to post weekly updates, I trucked on out to the barn, camera in hand, for the weekly way in.
