Hi, I never raised baby chicks. Here's the story - one of my 2 remaining silkies died last week. My one remaining silkie was broody so I bought her 2 chicks from the feed store and put them under her 2 nights ago. She accepted them instantly. Now I'm worried about the heat wave coming.
The...
I'm thinking of building a large wicking bed (10 ft by 3 ft)., raising it up off the ground about 3 ft. Putting a cage over top (hardware cloth over utility panel). I want to grow quail habitat ( partridge pea, buckwheat, Timothy hay....) and put 10-12 quail on it. Of course I will have a...
I've had 3 silkie chickens for 3 years now. I have always let them out into a chicken yard 2-3 days a week. The other day I was called away and didn't get home until about 10:30 pm. I closed the run door as usual and went to bed. When I went out the next morning, one of the chickens was out in...
I have 3 silkies that are a year old. They do not eat pellets, they will eat a few crumbles. They like scratch, tuna, cat food, mealworms (I tried to raise meal worms but it was too gross for me), grape leaves, comfrey and swiss chard. I hope canned cat food is not bad for them. They look fine...
Every time I let my chickens out, they scratch up holes and throw dirt on the walkways that makes it look messed up all the time. So I threw out a bunch of extra bedding and covered the walkways with it. Now it doesn't always look messed up I think.

I thought I'd share with you the pictures I took today of chicken coops and gardens. This was a tour of chicken coop to benefit Stonewall gardens at Stonewall Elementary school. It is an outside botanical lab for children.

Coop #1. It is actually 2...
Ok, one of the most valid arguments against chickens in the city, is they attract mice/rats. A better feeder would take the starch out of that argument. I am trying to keep rats/mice and ants out of my chicken feed and coop. I haven't seen a feeder yet that is adequate for city chickens. I need...
They won't eat pellets, strawberries, scrambled eggs, lettuce, asparagus, apples or yogurt. They won't drink out of a beak-time waterer. The only things I've seen them eat is 50/50 layer crumbles / chick start, dried mealworms, scratch, plum tree leaves.
I'm a little worried about them eating...
I got 3 silkies a week ago, reportedly about 6 mo old. They won't eat purina layena pellets. I have some in a bowl on the ground and some in a round hanging chick feeder at their chest level. They eat treats such as scratch and mealworms just fine. I've heard you shouldn't give them too many...
I see it as the first line on all the city ordinances on this website. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with Carlsbad New Mexico. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
I read somewhere you should not glue the vinyl flooring in. Seems odd to me. Has anyone else heard that? What did you do in your coop? I've got my vinyl flooring. It will be several weeks before I get it installed (still working on the run). I would love pointers on what works best in a small coop!
Merry Christmas everyone! I'm building my first coop and don't want to find out the hard way my latches are insufficient. I especially want to know if anyone uses rabbit latches and have they had any trouble. I was going to use them on a wire pop door from the run to the ~orchard. I have...
I'm thinking of putting a drain in the bottom of my coop to be able to power wash it with a weak bleach solution once a year. I would cover it when not in use so it doesn't become a rat door. Do you think this would work? Has anyone tried this before?
I'm building my coop under 2 holly bushes (small trees). I notice the berries falling and now I'm concerned holly berries may be poisonous to chickens.
I'm building my coop out of old fence. So, I think I will have a higher mite infestation risk. I've heard a new way to kill bedbugs is heat. 120-130 degrees for 3 hrs will kill all adults, nymphs and eggs. I also heard taking a hair dyer and blowing it in cracks will make them come out. So, I'm...
