Mixing new birds with old ones. Diseases? Sickness?

Heres the deal. I have an established flock of 16 birds. One Roo, the rest hens. A lady down the road is getting out of the egg business and says I can have as many of her young hens as I like. They are about 5 months old. I have read several places that one MUST keep a new batch of chickens...

Dominant Roo killed, other Roo....What up?

One of my EE and our awesome Australorp were killed by a hawk the other day. We have one other Roo, a beautiful Barred Rock. He and the Aust used to square off when they were growing up but it was clear the Aust was the dominant one. Now that he is gone, will this one realize it and take over...

My chicks are OLDER now. Mixed bag.

Had a few different opinions of what I had. Had some concrete opinions as well. What do you see here as far as breeds go. Was told the red in front was a production red, but over the past couple days, she grew a white tip on her tail. The big roo is a black sex link? Is this a EE? My...

Why does my hen do this?

Momma hatched out 3 chicks a few days ago. About 15 minutes ago, I noticed one of the chicks was just laying there, not moving too much. I posted here with symptoms but before I could get a response, it died. I was thinking maybe it was sick but was totally fine several hours ago. Then I...

Meat smoking, sausage making and curing.

Have been smoking meats and making my own sausage for a few years now. An absolutely addicting hobby. Make my own pastrami, bacon, sausage of all kinds. Smoke ribs, pork butts, even smoked corn and cabbage. Here are few of the things I have done in the past. First, is a Maple cured pork belly...

Candling brown eggs? Am I going about it wrong?

Have a few eggs that have not hatched yet. Its been 36 hours since the first ones came out of their shells. I have tried using a flashlight on them but I can tell a thing. Does the dark shell make a difference? I am using a mini mag light with an LED bulb.

20 meat birds processed thru my NEW homemade plucker.

I am always one to make something myself, even if I can buy it cheaper in the store. Fortunately for me, this one was very cheap to make. Started off with a 10" piece of grain pipe auger. Ordered my fingers off ebay. Using my public education, I figured out the spacing for 8 rows of 5 fingers...

    3 new arrivials

Nothing major but we did have 3 successful hatchings so far. 2 yellow ones and one black. Momma is a Barred Rock and pappa is a California White. (I hope these are all pullets) Things started of kinda bumpy with this hen. She has a total of 16 eggs in the nest. A few days ago, I noticed that 5...

    Mutt chicks???

Several weeks ago, we bought what the locally hatchery had left over from peoples orders. A few black sex links, several EE's, Buff, PR, Barred rock and white one lol. Out of them, we have 2 roos for sure. One being the Barred rock and the other a Black sex link. From most of the posts I read on...

Does my hen have NO maternial instinct????? Help

Have a barred rock hen that went broody a few weeks back. So far, she has stepped on or crushed 5 eggs that appear to have gone full term in the incubation process. All 5 chicks dead. Three more were just starting to break out this morning. When she gets back on the nest, she carelessly walks...

Momma hen killed possibly, eggs are at approx 3 weeks.

Went out to check on the hen, no sign. We just lost the roo the other day, possible predator. When I looked in the nest, there was one chick that hatched but was dead. No trace of the shell. If momma is gone, what if anything can I do to assure the other eggs will hatch? Should I gather them and...

What if any outside infulences decide the sex of a chick???

Was reading over some of the posts where people were talking about getting a boatload of roos when they wanted pullets when ordering from such places as TSC or halfassesd hatcheries. This started me thinking about something that occurs in the wild with alligators/crocodiles...

Where do YOUR chickens sleep at night????

In the coop right? Like most normal chickens? Well this past year, we had some bad run ins with predators. Coon, coyote, owls. All the chickens left the coop and now we only have one hen and one rooster. The hen is currently sitting on eggs she laid next to the dogs pen, and the rooster, well...

Does she stop laying while sitting?

The last hen we have would lay an egg a day. She has left the coop some time ago to hang out in the trees, or up above our dogs pen. She has laid over a dozen eggs in the corner and a few days ago, I go out and she is sitting on them. Shes a barred rock. My question is, do they stop laying eggs...

    Now she decides to sit.....

Several weeks ago, we got a nice lot of mixed breed layer chicks. Past flock was all but wiped out by predators. Thats a different story. The only ones left over from the previous flock are a California White Roo, and a Barred Rock Hen. She would continue to lay eggs in the coop and I tried...

    Mixed breeds???

I have a few really nice looking chicks, all pullets. Breeds are Ameraucanas, black sex link, barred rock, production red and buff orpington. I also have one big ole California White roo from a previous flock. I like the idea of having chicks running around the property and have the room for...

Not letting the newly hatched chick play any reindeer games..

Oh man, that was good title LOL. Upon looking for an answer to a question about introducing new chickens to an existing flock, I remembered something from a flock we had a few years back and thought I'd ask as I have not found the answer. Like I said, a few years back, we had some very broody...

Heres my chicks at approx 6 weeks.

Howdy all. The guy at the hatchery was not quite 100% sure of what breeds they were. I just wanted to mixed layers and what he had left over from peoples orders is what I took. I have a fairly good idea of what breed they may be going off the list of what he normally offers but he also orders...

    I am still a noob

Hey gang. I was about to post my egg layers but can't find the area to add photos???? So I went over to the FAQ area and it appears that due to spam, I might not be allowed to post until the system no longer considers me a newbie. No problem, that's cool. I am a member a few forums and...
