Hello, I'm a small farmer in the Virginia piedmont who mainly does sheep. I'm adding chickens back to the farm after about a year of not really having any around.

12+ SILKIE EGGS FROM SQ STOCK(PAINT INCLUDED)!!! $1!!! **pics**

I couldn't resist throwing my hat in, although my husband might shoot me since we JUST sold off all the extra cockerels... "It's just one batch of eggs, honey!" is probably going to make him facepalm....

    Modern Game Bantams

Quote: The silver blues are just gorgeous. I'm trying to decide if I just want to work with blacks or if I want to pick up another color or two... then again since I can only find them at Ideal, I should probably stick with something basic like black. And order 50 in the hopes of getting...

    Modern Game Bantams

Bumping an old thread because I finally managed to get a trio of black MGBs. These little guys are so fun! Great personalities -- even though they've been with me a week they come running to the door of their pen when I come out (it may be because they have learned I am the Food Lady). I wish...

    Oriental Gamefowl Thread!

Quote: Some hardfeather breeds, notably Asils, Ga Noi, and Shamos, are prone to bare patches on breast, legs, and top of the wings. It is not a defect, but is desireable........Pop I am SO GLAD this got asked -- I have a leetle Modern Game Bantam roo with exactly the bare spots described and...

    bantams and tempratures

Someone else interested in the question! I'm not TOO terribly worried about my main flock of bantams as they all huddle together, silkies and hard-feathered birds, and keep each other warm. But I have 3 Modern Game bantams on quarantine right now and I'm wondering if in a couple months I...

    Strange mixture.

I have a chick I knew would be odd who sounds very similar. The chick is from a blue showgirl rooster over an easter egger hen that's colored like a BCM. I suspect it of being a pullet because as I understand it the black silkie skin is sex-linked and if it were a cockerel, it would have paler...

    New Silkie Eye Trouble

Quote: Sonoran, what dose of the ivermectin pour-on do you use for silkies? For applying sevin dust to the birds, I used a big fluffy make-up brush like you'd use to put a powder foundation on. Dip in the bag of sevins, knock off the excess, and it had about one 8 week old silkie's worth of...

    New Silkie Eye Trouble

Posting on an old thread but it might help someone -- I had a silkie chick like this. Tried Tylan, didn't work. Tried Sulmet, didn't work. Tried antibiotic eye ointment, didn't work. It seemed to perk up a little with electrolytes and vitamins in the water, but not as active as the other...

I can't tell the difference!! Do I need better pictures?

Quote: Egg color genes are independent of comb genes as far as I know. So it just depends on what egg color genes the parents of the birds were carrying; no reason a cushion-combed bird *couldn't* lay a blue or green egg.

    Chicken lice.. I'm over it!!!

I've used Sevin dust and after a little experimentation found that using a big fluffy make up brush to apply it to the chickens works really well. It's easiest if you have two people, one to restrain the chicken and one to lift wings/tail/etc and dust.

Newly hatched chick. NO EYES! **UPDATE 1-31-12** SHE LAYED!!!!!!!!

Huh, there was a new mutation discovered that causes severe microphthalmia (tiny eye) in chickens back in 1992: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1578107 -- I'd be interested to know if this little one and the other cross with no eyes turn out to be pullets, it looks like this particular gene...

What do you do with your chickens????

Chalk me up in the "pet chickens" crew. Our older hens will have a home with us til they keel over dead of old age or other natural cause. We're about to expand the pen (too many predators to free range) so we can make sure we keep some hens of prime laying age around for eggs, but the older...

    Silkie Cross Thread!! PICS!!

Quote: I have 2 birds that look almost identical to her! I paid $52 for one of them! I would pay 52 in a second if i could get another one. The Farm Mama: http://www.thefarmmama.com/chickensmore.htm has "Easter Egger Silkies" and ships nationwide, you might get in touch with her?

    InBreeding?

Quote: yikes. is this common? is that what people mean when they say to be "prepared to heavily cull"? Yep. Heavy line-breeding can turn up recessives that are severely detrimental to the children of the pair. The best thing to do is to cull not only the deformed descendants, but the pair...
