they'reHISchickens : Can I get an opinion here? This is our BlueCM roo who is a year and a half old. We put our 2blacks and 1 blue laced hen with him this year and hatched what we could. We still havent' figured out how to hatch more than about 35%, but are working on it. Hatches were heavily...

Man those are some beautiful eggs, the Olives and Cocoa's especially! Answering on the splash - Yes, you can get a dark laying splash. It isn't common but is possible, and it is possible to breed for darker.

Hey, egg color genetics are pretty mysterious. . . . If I knew someone who knew them well, dark and blues especially, I'd LOVE to pick their brain. All I know is the basics and that dark eggs are actually several genes at work.

Quote: How? I don't know what Silver Ermine is but the Columbians are just Columbian, no Lavender.

Quote: Yep. Langshans have way too high of a tail set, way too big of a tail, too long of a body, and not a large or broad enough breast. All US based Langshans are indeed feather-legged though. People please don't be so inspired by my mention of Ameraucanas though. I mean that ONLY in...

Pea comb and muffs being dominant aren't hard to get rid of. I do understand you on the shallow bit though. (however it does vary, and I've seen a lot of big Lavender Ameraucanas, thanks to the Orp background in some of them) The blue egg part - It's not that I would mean to introduce the blue...

Opinionated people or people who don't like me, go ahead and rage about it, but - I'd use Ameraucanas. Why? Their bodies actually compare better than Orpingtons, and if you've noticed, when you get single comb flukes from Olive Eggers or when you keep breeding OE's down the line, you get some...

Yeah, I changed it. From personal experience I don't know, but I had a discussion a little while ago with someone on breeding it out, and, personally I think it can be a tricky process but not too hard. The thing is - You can't just breed it out and get a solid blue/black though unless you had...

And Illia is soo stalking this thread. Seriously though, no, I'm not that knowledgeable. I'm sure Henk or Sonaran can easily trump my "knowledge."

Well he is a beaut, (except for the clean legs ) but you're forgetting that he's got a silver gene in there too. Even if he did have the mahogany gene, he'd still look more like a Blue-Salmon than a Blue Copper. Just sayin'

I don't see BCM's there. That isn't a "lemon blue copper" though. Looks like a Birchen with both silver and gold genes, or just straight silver. The varying amount of color says it looks like someone crossed a Blue w/silver genes and a Black Copper? Is this a project I'm looking at?

If one hatched with clean legs, watch it!! You could likely have some chicks in there carrying only one copy for leg feathering. Watch for chicks with very sparse feathering. I've got loads of 3/4 Marans chicks right now, and some of them have clean legs to just a few stubs on them. Bad bad. I...

Quote: Babies? What age? You really can't tell much in babies except comb, eye color, plumage color, and a few other traits like tail angle and only if they're over 6 weeks old. Otherwise when getting chicks and the sort, look at the PARENT stock. Also, avoid chicks that have brown on their...

Yep, that's a lot of boys. And I can already see one who I'd easily consider culling. (if I were breeding for the standard) The photo of the cockerel eating greens is so cute!

Quote: Yep, we've really just started. I have three heifers that are old enough to breed but the summer heat kept them from cycling. Just gave them some lute to jump start them. Illia, you surprise me. Not many people are familiar with the breed and are always asking what they are. I'm pretty...

Quote: So I was bored & couldn't sleep....I logged on to this site and the picture they have of a Blue Marans Rooster looks like 1/2 of his tailfeathers are white...wassup with that? The same that their Wheaten hen is very poorly colored and their Blue Copper are under Birchen, and show a...

Quote: Nice eggs! The cockerel has way too much color on the breast, that's about all I can judge at that age with those angles. The girls all have combs with folds in them which isn't good, the copper-necked one is the only one with good color but hey, its often hard to find a well...
