Hello Marans folks from the long-lost Ivywoods. It's been forever since I've visited the thread.... um... like 35,000 posts! Wow, you guys are a chatty bunch! I never left BYC, I just spend WAY too much time on some of the other threads, like the Kansas thread.
I still have my marans. I...
In the chicks pictured that gilavina was discussing, the first thing I noticed was the shape of the head. Some of our Jersey Giants we used to have had a head shaped like that. It kind of reminds me of a roman nosed horse.
You know how a squirrel will sit with it's tail curled up over it's back... a squirrel tail in poultry refers to a tail with too great of an angle. In marans the tail should have an angle of about 45 degrees from the ground. Sometimes tails come up at an angle greater than 90 degrees, or...
Kathy it sounds like you need to go into the fur harvester business!
Hawks and owls. I think they are the worst. If you have free range chickens, how the heck do you protect them? An owl is the only thing I have lost a bird to since we got the GP dogs. It took a guinea hen. I let a bunch...

Been there, done that!
We have now trapped and removed 42 coons, and 38 possums.
Where'd ya move them to? Gilavina's place? Just kidding!
I just checked my broody hen again. I don't think the last 3 are going to hatch. I'll give them till morning, though.
3 new BCM's. There are 3 still under the hen that have started to hatch, but I think one may have died in the shell. I left them there and maybe she can work some magic and get them hatched.
A little closer look.
Getting a drink. They took to water so fast you might have thought they were...

I hope that the pens turn out well. I'm still gonna have plenty of time to get my plans in order over the winter and to sort out the exact supplies I have and what supplies I will need still. For the most part I have nearly all the stuff I'll need minus some more 2x4s and 4x4 posts and...
Way to go Vicki! Yes, you need to keep those traps set. The scarry part is, where there are possums there are raccoons. The worst chicken massacre I've ever seen was due to raccoons. Fortunately, my great pyrenees dogs keep those varmints away.
Wow! Your new barn sounds like it's going to...
I went out and looked the chicks over. The buyer had wanted to know if they all have feathered legs and yes, they do. So far all the marans I have hatched have had feathered legs.
I'm in the process of rebuilding runs in the barn. This is a temporary thing since I intend to get a poultry...
Get 'em Vicki! I despise possums. I hate to say that about any animal, but possums really turn me off.
I just checked under my broody BCM hen. I had 6 eggs under there. I now have 3 eggs and 3 CUTE LITTLE FUZZYBUTTS! I wan't planning to hatch this fall, but someone emailed me and wanted...
Hi Folks! Sorry for being "absent" for so long. I've just been SO BUSY! Today will be no different. I just got home last night from a week long "sister's week." We had a great time! Part of what we did was go to the poultry show in Sedalia, MO. I showed a couple bantam black cochins, one...
IT'S FRIDAY!
I have a week of vacation STARTING NOW! I got 5 hours sleep. I will pack everything, including a bunch of chickens that I'm hauling, drive down to sis's, probably sit up yacking way too long, get back up at 3:00 a.m so I get get to Sedalia. I decided to show a couple of my...

I think he looks pretty nice. Promising. I'm no expert, but he looks like he would be okay to use for breeding. He might be just a little short backed, affecting the tail angle which is just a little high. (Does anyone thing the tail angle comes down a little as they fill in and...

its that time of year eh? Where its not so much fun going out to the pens...cause it hard to look at them in all their sadness...I just hope they feather out fast. its getting colder everyday. I don't know if I'm gonna end up making it to sedalia with everything going on here...but I...
Since the BCM's have just recently been accepted by the APA, I think the best thing for someone wanting to learn more about breeding"good" BCM's is to read the APA standard. Also, the general information about chickens in the "Standard of Perfection" is something everyone wanting to breed...
I have about 6 eggs under a broody. They are BCMs. They should be hatching right around halloween. The goofy hen went broody in a big feed pan under my auto feeder. I threw some hay in there and she has that all arranged to her liking and is pretty serious about her brooding job. When I go...
