Spoiled girl making it hard for me to clean the kitchen!

I have to euthanize one of my newly hatched chicks. She has a prolapsed vent that isn't getting better with treatment. :hit I'm going to do the NYD hatch a long to help keep my mind off of her death. Anyone else doing that?

So my sick chick died, and my daughter buried her next to a wild bird that ran into our glass door and died a couple months ago. :(

How is your chick doing? One of mine took almost 2 hours to zip all the way. I watched carefully the whole time, ready to intervene if it looked like it was getting weak, as opposed to just resting now and again.

At least one of the hatchery chicks we got yesterday is dying. Am I a horrible chick parent to make it comfortable, and let it go peacefully? I can't afford (time wise) to coddle weak chickens, especially ones that are weak from the beginning. Don't hurt me... :hide

Your chicks are adorable! I don't know about the Wyandottes, but my BCM chicks (my profile pic) are more two-toned and darker than your chicks. So I'm going to guess blue splash.

FarmerViola - sorry about your lost chick. But it sounds like your hatch rate was good for shipped eggs. Congrats. I officially ended my hatch on a gut feeling that my other three eggs weren't going to hatch. Turns out that they were not even close to full development. I only lifted the air...

I did candle. No internal pipping, no movement, but they are very hard to see into. I think I'll give them to day 25.

Today is day 23 for me - had one hatch day 21, and one hatch yesterday. Three are still left. I've been seeing little movements, but no peeping or pipping. They are all BCMs, but the two that hatched were significantly smaller eggs than the three that are left. Could the three larger ones just...

This one has some leg feathers, but the second one has a whole lot more. I'm anxious to know sex!

How did your second Marans toes turn out? Mine had curled toes, just like the first one, but they also straightened out within a few hours.

Finally my other chick is zipping on its own! It's slow going, but it's going. Hopefully that means I won't have to assist.

Next questions...My other pipped egg had not started zipping for 24 hours. And I didn't see the beak moving near the pip hole, so I gently pulled the shell away just there to look in. It started peeping up a storm, which is a good sign, but I couldn't see the beak, until I got a flashlight to...

Congrats! Our BCM that hatched yesterday had the same issue with her (I'm just calling iy a her!) toes, but I just let her be to see what happened. Now she's up and walking around well and they seem to be fine.

Emergency question!! My newly hatched chick is pecking at the pip of another one that's not zipping yet! Is it going to hurt it?

T That's scary - hopefully it will work out. By day 10 you should see good veining if the eggs are light colored. But I wouldn't toss anything until at least day 14, just in case.

I have a baby!!! It took about 75 min to zip, then it kicked out and has been moving around and chirping non-stop since then! Aren't they supposed to be tired? Lol!
