Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I'd take the male and breed it to the bearded females. See what hatches and pick the best male(s) and breed them back to their mothers again. That is what I would do with them anyway.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I think at this point no matter where you get them from, they are going to take some work to make them show quality.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I think I would breed towards one color or the other not in between.

It will be interesting to see if when she is older this goes away or not. I have a feeling that it might.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

When I had Spitz they never had a pecking problem (and actually my Polish never did either, it was only birds without crests that pecked), but then my birds were from a couple of different people. I felt they were one of the nicest crested birds that I had.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I got spitz eggs from two different sources. I hatched 3 from one and 2 from the other. One of the two from the second set died. The three in the first set have some nice color and crests, the one from the second set is much lighter and I believe the crest is going to go backwards instead of...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

My spitzhauben have laid all winter, unfortunately their type is very poor and I still don't have a roo or more eggs.

Most of their breeds are sold out this time of year, every year.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

Interesting. I would definitely be interested in a crested breed that went broody. I am really pleased to be getting all this information now. I think I will be looking onto getting some from Ideal in the spring as well.

I kind of like the way his face is ringed with black. That is kind of neat. He does look Polish to me.

So I have to wonder, on these ones with the small wattles that can still be seen, maybe it is not the wattles that are the problem but the fact that the beard is not good enough to cover them.

Quote: Speaking of huge wattles.....if you want to see some huge wattles on both gold and cream brabanters, look here: http://www.nantahala-farm.com/chicken-brabanter-s.shtml That's where I bought my first brabanters from -- before I knew any better. I selected out youngsters that were...

Very big white earlobes there, maybe from a fairly recent Polish cross?

Very good information here. I did not know that about the cream brabanters, I like that color too. I am so glad this thread got started before I got brabanters, I have learned a lot and that really is the whole point, whether we agree with each other or not.

I think they are under the White Egg Layers section.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I think I would take them either way. With wattles or without. Since there isn't a standard here.

They are beautiful as well. Do you have hatching eggs for sale?

Mine don't exactly look like they have Polish in them, but then I only have hens right now, but their crests go back instead of forward and the lacing on two of them is really poor. I have my doubts that they would throw a correct crest. I think you would need to start with some with correct...
