3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Woot! Got my first egg today from my NYD chicks. Actually, I suspect there may be a few pullet eggs in the woods, but I am not going out there and risking lyme disease to find out. :P But it hasn't been as hot the last few days so I left them in the coop. Was rewarded with one tiny green egg! =)

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I put mine out when it was pretty low temps outside .. 30-40's day, teens at night.. but I have a small heat source in the barn that keeps the whole barn around 40-50, so they are fine. I'm cranking the heat down this week also to get them acclimated to 'outside' temps, so in a few weeks...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I just sold off 10 of my NYD hatch chicks. Needed room in the brooder ASAP. :) I'm going to put the rest out in the barn in another week or so, but I've turned off the ecoglow to get them prepped and ready for colder temps. :)

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Someone on here has a thread re: a chicken with BOTH eyes missing.. it's doing well! So I figured I'd give my one eyed guy a chance. He's able to do everything he needs to (only way I can tell apart at quick glance is by the little piece of vet tape still around one leg from his hobbles...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I posted this over on 'what breed or gender', but wanted to show you all that my one eyed chick is doing just fine. Even better, looks like I got two rumpless, possibly tufted chickies out of my 'araucana' eggs. =) Aaaaand this little guy has a new home - and they know he's missing an eye and...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Neither have I. And they are still in the house! (yuk). :P Next week they may move out to the barn, depending on feathering. I plan on keeping at least some of them. Depends on how many boys there are. =)

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I'm planning to sell most of mine, although I'd like to keep a few. Waiting to see how many boyos and girlies I have, but since I am also doing the V-day hatch can't keep them all. The feed store that delivers my feed looked at me strangely when I told them I needed another bag of chick starter...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

So far I have two almost for sure roos in my 21 chicks. Obviously there will be more, but they haven't shown themselves yet. :P One is a huge, slow feathering and agressive brahma mix, the other is my little one eyed barred rock, who as expected is feathering in as a roo. The rest of the chicks...

I haven't had a chance to do any cutesy poses (LOL), so I'll just submit my little NN.

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

One of my runts died today - I'm not real happy with the chicks from one of my sellers.. Not a byc member as far as I know. All the 'special needs' chicks hatched from those eggs. One runty chick (RIR) was doing well this morning but I think it may have been a mushy chick - that's the one that...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

I'll probably do the v-day hatch also, since I have those Hot2pot eggs coming. Not sure, but don't think I will do the easter hatch - I have an order of hatchery chicks coming in the next week and they'll have to put me on 'animal hoarders' if I get any more!

Quote: Thank you, everyone for the votes. However, it doesn't seem "right" to me that a hatch-a-long volunteer should win, therefore I'm deferring to a very worthy second place: AK MICHELLE! Congrats to both of you!!!

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

My naked necks are pretty smart (for chickens).. they are all girls, tho.. . My 'special' chicken is a BO rooster, but he was scalped as a chick so he's excused for being a bit derpy.

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote: Nope, no light from the brinsea other than a little 'on' light. I remember when I finally put my first chicks out into their coop after being under a big red light for 8 weeks how much OH NO noise they made.. Now I get them used to dark early on. They sleep all night just like if they...

3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Tried to film the nipple stampede today but a) SD card getting errors (grr) and b) the video I got was too dark. bah! My special needs chicks are both doing great. 'blinky', my one eyed misshapen little guy, is fighting his way to the water nipples like the rest and he's now hitting the mark...
