I would not recommend that. If you reinforce the single combs, they'll start to pop up a lot more and they'll be hard to get rid of. If you only have 1 rooster, he obviously carries the recessive trait for single combs. Some (or maybe all) of your hens carry it too. I would get rid of your...
Mine did the same, they pretty much always do. The rain must have forced the worms out of the ground, because my Silkies were going crazy scratching and pecking when I looked out the window to see what they were up to :D
His crest actually does have quite a bit of orange now, not uniform, but a lot. And his chest is also now almost completely orange too. He's definitely not perfect, for sure. How much he's changed between then and now is almost shocking.
I seem to hatch a bunch of these, but I never keep many...
Thanks :) May I ask why? This was a fairly old picture, and he's got a lot more red/gold now than he did when I took this. Either way, doesn't really matter, he'll be headed to a new home soon :/
The answer to this question very much depends on who you ask. But, here's how I see it. Silkies are hardy little birds. They're still chickens, they preen their feathers and spread oil over them just like other chickens. I don't do anything special for mine. My run is not covered, and I open the...
Just so you can compare, kellyloveschad, here are some of my blue partridges:
This young cockerel looks similar to Freddie Mac, no? Except he isn't frizzled, examples below.
Blue partridge frizzled Sizzle pullet. That's a very light blue partridge frizzled Silkie behind her.
Blue partridge...
Not stupid at all. When I started breeding Sizzles, I out crossed to a frizzled Cochin. Then I bred the offspring back to Silkies to get back Silkie type. I was going for a different feather type, but the general idea is the same. Your task will be more difficult since you'll have to bring back...
I (respectfully) disagree. Freddie Mac is a Silkie, a frizzled Silkie, but still a Silkie. And he appears to a blue partridge, a non standard color. The smooth roo could have some Favorelles in there, but I think its more likely that his incorrect comb comes from Cochin (or Polish) lineage. Most...
Your normal feathered birds (without the typical shredded Silkie feathers) are not Silkies, but I would call them Sizzles. I breed them as well, they're wonderful! There's a Sizzle thread here on BYC, a search should turn it up :)
Splash is two copies of blue, paint is dominant white and the black shows through holes in the dom. white.
Most Silkies are recessive white, getting paints is not as easy as crossing a white and black. There is a paint Silkie thread, might be a good place to do some research :)
Something else to keep in mind, that bird is only 5 months old. He's in the midst of a surge of hormones that are telling him he's the man. A lot of my boys do this, around the same age, and once the testosterone levels out, so does their attitude. I think he'll very likely calm down, especially...
Yea, I pretty sure, with Silkies, the only reliable method is when they crow or lay an egg. I definitely don't disagree with that statement, not one bit :P
I have noticed, at least with my partridges, that most of them can be feather sexed when their adult plumage starts coming in. The males get vibrant patches of orange, red and gold. The females tend to be a more demure brown or blond. I say most of them, because I have gotten a few males that...
Looking at the picture you posted, your Silkie looks to be frizzled. That may have something to do with the thinner feathers. Though, I haven't noticed my frizzled Silkies looking thinner, but its a feather mutation that can express differently on different birds (how tight or loose the curl is...
I'm not sure if there is such a thing as cheap hatching eggs. If you order eggs and they don't hatch, would you still consider them cheap? If you pay a little more for chicks, they arrive to you safely, would you consider that money well spent? I would. I've ordered plenty of hatching eggs and...
Red pyle is a project color in Silkies, but it is common in other breeds, like game birds :) I think they're beautiful too, definitely a project worth working on!
