I always leave a "clutch" of plastic Easter eggs in the nest for them to go broody on. Then when I'm sure they r committed, I switch them out for the real thing. ;)

They test your flock for certain diseases. NPIP stands for National Poultry Improvement Plan.

I've been on this kick getting everyone chatting about getting NPIP cert. and suddenly, I've got sick birds like crazy! Guess I'll call the dept of AG tomorrow still, but to be tested for the bad stuff instead of worrying about NPIP, for now. :(

Oh wow! That's different. I looked up some info for Ky. It says the birds need to be at least 4 months old to test. Which most of mine r, but I have 3 about 3 weeks old from Sheri Minkner! Lol I have nowhere away from the rest of my flock to keep them until they r old enough, once they come off...

I def didn't sit & read that entire thing, but I scanned a bunch and didn't see a single state that didn't require some kind of certification. Lol Bad part, I've been shipping eggs for a year! I didn't even know they were included in all of that. :/ Does it cost anything to become NPIP...

So, I was told that I only have to be NPIP to ship day old chicks IF they are crossing state lines?? Is this true?? I have family, in my state, that wants some, but would need to ship them.

Guess its time to give in and unplug the bator today. :/ I have 3 VERY beautiful Sheri Minkner Sizzle babies in my brooder. Hatched 4, but 1 died. 1 still looks a bit rough and keeps getting MASSIVE pasty butt, so a little extra TLC, & hopefully he/she will continue to flourish! Can't wait to...

So I'm on day 24 of my last hatch for a few months. They are expensive eggs, so I refuse to unplug it til the end of day 25, just incase. What will I do without babies!?!? :( Idk if I'm really capable of keeping all 3 of them unplugged for 4-5 months! But my brooder is outside in an...

Got 2 baby sizzles in the bator! Had to help one out after it'd been pipped 28 hrs. It seems healthy, other than its just not up on its feet well yet. :/ its ADORABLE!! Hopefully he/she is just taking longer to figure out how to work their legs. #2 I just had to tie off its umbilical and cut...

But they could eat that as well right? So, basically the same. I know many people use sand, which they could eat. I don't want to do it if its not safe, but I really like this stuff. So, if it is safe, DEF wanna use it. Lol

Yeah, that is the same thing. That's kind of what I was afraid of. It would make awesome bedding for the brooder, other than them eating it! Lol Too bad we cannot litter train chicks!

Anyone ever used the pine pellets for equine as brooder bedding? I'm using it for my mini pig litter box, & it is AWESOME!!! But, is it safe for chicks?? Its all natural and biodegradable. Its large pellets, but once its wet, it turns into like a dust.
