«We Could Be Legends»

"Of course I'm fine." She said, dismissing his concern. "You're the one who's hurt." She frowned back at the open wound. "You're sure you don't want me to heal it?" She paused for a moment looking back at his face, wondering if she should know what his powers were, and if it would be strange for her to ask.

Toby pulled his shirt back over his shoulder, wincing as the fabric touched it. He knew it should get healed, and what the potential consequences were if he left it how it was, but the thought of not letting his magic get stronger seemed to outweigh anything else. But then again, it hurt.
He shook his head. “I’ll be okay. This isn’t- it isn’t that bad.” Toby tried to convince both Alice and himself of that, glancing at his shoulder. He hoped that if he said it enough times it would come true.

Alice's attention was partly divided between Toby and Jessi, who had found another person who was hurt.

Toby looked back up at Alice. “Go check on him,” He said softly. “He probably needs your help more than I do.”

Toby nodded. “I-I think so,” he said. He frowned, watching her with concern. “Are you okay?” He asked. He tried to refrain from flinching as her hand gently touched his face, but his eyes still squeezed shut.

“Crow, your arm is broken,” Jessi said, crossing her arms. “You won’t waste her time. If that doesn’t get fixed soon, it’ll heal weird and you won’t be able to use it. If you can’t use it, you can’t fly. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think flying is something you would like to keep doing.”
Crow turned into a crow and cawed at her indignantly before hopping away.
Crow thought about turning back into a bird. Maybe she'll stop bothering me if I do. He thought. No, wait, I have to be the mature, understanding adult. He stood up straighter and sighed. "Alright." He said in defeat. "But only if it doesn't deplete her energy."

"Oh... My god." Lachlan whispered, smile fading as his brows shot up quickly. "Mapleshade had a son...?" He shook his head, sitting down at the edge of the car's seat. She was evil, but we possibly just orphaned a child. A very young child. Wolfram never said she had a son. His mouth opened searching for the right words, but couldn't seem to find them. "Alec,--" He began, his voice strong, but still with a sweet undertone. "--You need to very brave right now. Your mother was an inhuman, but she didn't want to be. So she found a poison, an Antihero, and did anything to get it. But it would've killed her, and over half the population of the world. She thought we had it, but we didn't. When she found it, and used it, it didn't work. So she brought her Pure, and you, here. Still thinking we had it, she attacked." He stopped, not knowing how to put the last part of his explanation. "I'm sorry, Alec. A fire broke out, and she fell into it. No one... Could've done anything." He murmured, wincing at his own blunt words. I hate this. I hate this so much.
"Do-- Do you know your father? Who he is, or have any older siblings?" Lachlan asked, racking his brain for what to do. Wait, wait, wait. Wasn't Mapleshade obsessed with Wolfram's dad, isn't that what Mom said? What was his name... Michael?
Why... Oh.

His mouth went slack with possible realization. Oh crud, if I'm right.
Alec's eyes became wide, rounded orbs of green-blue. But unlike Lily had expected, no tears fell. Mapleshade was his mum? Oh, no...
When Alec spoked again, his voice was choked, like he was struggling to hold down sobs. "Mom's....dead?" His voice was a soft whimper. "My father...his name...Michael? I think that's his name...and Shadow..." Silent tears poured down the boys pale face, even though it appeared he was fighting it.
His head lowered, eyes flittering shut against the tears. "Shadow died."
Lily's heart clenched in sympathy and absolute fear. He's Mapleshade's son. Michael's son. Wolfram's...oh god, this child is Wolfram's half-brother.
She reached a hand out, attempting to comfort the boy. But then, he flinched so suddenly from her touched, eyes snapped open, his voice breaking as he spoke. "Where's my dad?!"

Alice nodded, and glance at the kid in the back seat, only catching the first part of the conversation before she moved away.

"Don't worry about me." she said walking over to them. "Apparently I slept all day, so I've got extra to spare. Also, this helps." Alice pulled the small glowing orb out of her pocket and held it up.

No, no, no. Oh, please, no.
Lachlan shook his head, staring at the boy. Michael is Wolfram's dad. This boy... Alec is Wolfram's brother. And Shadow was... The boy with fire. We killed him. I helped kill this boy's family.
"Alec, earlier today... He attacked some people. I wasn't there, I don't know how it happened. I'm sorry, he's... Gone, too." He murmured with a wince, terrified of how the small boy would react to being told that his mother, older brother, and father were all dead.
"I'm so sorry, Alec. None of this should have happened. I do know something, though. You have another older brother. I don't know if you knew about him. I'm his friend, and I can tell you he's a very good man." He laid a warm hand on the boy's shoulder, trying desperately to comfort him. "Hey, look at me? It's..." How am I supposed to tell him it's gonna be okay? He's an orphan now. "Gonna be tough. But you'll get through it, okay? You're strong, and we'll help you through this."

Alice nodded, and glance at the kid in the back seat, only catching the first part of the conversation before she moved away.

Crow pulled back his sleeve, though it was pretty shredded already. "Ok," he said quickly, before he could change his mind.

Grace watched Peter with dull eyes, disappointed about the healing not working. Still, she didn't want Alice to know that, so she shot a grateful 'thank you' at her back as she disappeared into the van. She then looked back at Peter, suppressing a sigh.
Suddenly, Peter gasped and shot up, his hands up in a bad imitation of a karate stance. He looked around wildly, but when he saw Grace and the others, he relaxed. "Oh. We're not being attacked."
Grace stared at him blankly, speechless. Then her face erupted into a grin. "Of course we're not being attacked, you moron, the Pure have basically retreated."
"Oh," Peter scratched his head with a trembling hand. "Well, I feel like I've just run a mile under the ruthless eyes of our 6th grade PE teacher."
"You were in some sort of fading coma." Grace explained, managing to make her voice cheerful, if only to dull her feelings with her weird sense of humor.
"Oh, yeah.. wait, what?"
"Yeah. Alice healed you. She seemed kinda spaced out though."
"That's weird. Healing is.. surprisingly painful."
Grace shrugged, "Maybe it was the energy returning to you. I dunno. I'm not a doctor."
A broad smile filled her face when she saw that Peter had woken up. She didn't think it was anything she had done, but hopefully it meant he was going to be ok. Things were starting to look better compared to how they were just a little while ago.

Crow pulled back his sleeve, though it was pretty shredded already. "Ok," he said quickly, before he could change his mind.
Alice grinned at Crow, and gently wrapped her cold hand around his hot wrist. The bone slowly knit itself back together popping as it moved around. Healing all these people at once was extremely satisfying. To this point the only people she'd healed, were herself and Dyn. Or, maybe not. Since everyone seemed to know what her powers were now. What happened? What had she forgotten? Alice bit at her lower lip as she silently healed Crows arm. Was there anyway she could find out without making people worry about her?

No, no, no. Oh, please, no.

As Lachlan went to put a hand on Alec's shoulder, the boy recoiled violent. "I had one brother!" He spat, his voice high-pitched. "Shadow! And he's dead! And so is my mom and dad!" He fell back, his chest heaving as tears fell to the floor of the van, staining his pale cheeks.
His words didn't sound like a distressed, grieving seven year old. He sounded like someone much older. It was scary how adult he sounded. Maple and Michael's influence, perhaps?
He buried his face in his small hands, knees drawing up to his chest, shoulders shaking with silent sobs. "You're lying. You're lying."

Alice's attention was drawn back to the van. Recognizing the same words she'd shrieked to her sister not long ago. Camilla. Our parents are gone? And I... She looked back at Crows arm trying to concentrate. Whether they were gone or not, there were other people who needed help. She had to stay here, in the present, not letting her mind wander to what might have happened. What probably happened. Everyone else believed it. But she couldn't. Not right now.

"All better?" She asked letting go of him. She didn't look up. She couldn't.

Toby hadn’t paid attention to the people sitting behind him. In fact, he was spacing out so he didn’t even know people were in the car with him. That is, until a little boy started screaming that Shadow, who was apparently his brother, was dead, along with the rest of his family.
Toby’s stomach twisted into a sickening knot, and he slowly turned around to look behind him, his eyes wide. By the look of it, the boy couldn’t have been older than eight, yet he sounded surprisingly mature, almost like a military soldier, programmed to act professional no matter what. Whatever the reason, Toby found it utterly terrifying.
Shadow. That was the kid I- I-
His gaze flicked to the person next to Alec. Of course it had to be Lily. His gaze went back to Alec. “I-I’m so sorry,” Toby said, the feeling of impending doom growing stronger.
Alpha pawed Toby’s leg, but Toby shoved him off, staggering out of the van, grabbing his backpack and swinging the very heavy bag over his shoulder, ignoring the pain as he did so.
He pulled off his now-useless glasses and shoved them into the pocket of his hoodie, stumbling away from the van and everyone else. I killed his brother. It’s all my fault. I’m a monster. Please, let me go back and change it.
