➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

last 15 jumbos set with 5 homegrown (large eggs) first round jumbos go to lockdown Thursday with falb fee (68 eggs). That bator will then become hatcher for july hatch. not sure if I will set more or shut it down for a bit.....depends on how quickly hubby gets my grow-out and brooding cages ready as well as some other factors. We’ve got to get chicken area cleaned up and try to get the 6 chickens moved over and convince the 3 that they are chickens!!
I have grow out pens to get built too! Hubby doesn't do cages, that's my job. He does seem to enjoy building aviaries and coop add-ons though.

Wow. Today. Lost a chick. Another has a closed eye. No apparent injury. Will watch. Knew I shouldn't have declared batch count. I thought one week was good. 27 hatchlings.

B#1&2 the listless hen was suffering. Not even trying to run away. Breast bone prominent. I wanted to say lash egg, but there was a multicoated rotting egg in her with another right behind it. Egg bound. No more suffering. Looked like a lash egg. Smelled like a lash egg.

Then there was the duck. What a day.

So my not quite five week old boys have started to crow. Hope the hormones hold off long enough to get them to a decent size before they start fighting. Is eight weeks usually a good age for butchering jumbos?
Everything I've read says 8 weeks to butcher. It's what I am planning. If you discover otherwise, I'd love to see it.

:hugsi’ve had a similar couple of weeks.....found one that i missed from yesterday apparently that the other birds had cannabilized to the point that no idea of gender or cause of death! Lost one of my 2+ week old grau fee yesterday too to wicking from waterer due to removing puppy pads from brooder. moved remainder outside with others in temp grow-out and started moving insiders to shed. with only 8 in there now and waterer on 2x8 and brooder plate for nighttime they seem to be doing well!! Indoor chicks doing well overall with exception of albino. not expecting him to make it past 2 weeks if that long.:hit
