Ok maybe now.
How young can they be to do this?
Can I practice on my babies?

I'm too scared I'm going to hurt them.

No i wouldnt try it any less than 6 wks while all thats still developing they might not even have sperm built up But rather to practice i would go grab the one breeder u kno is for sure a male. See if hes got a little pouch behind his vent, if so, u dont have to press hard just a little rolling action from tail toward vent.

No thanks. I just took my shower. I don't want to get foamed.

i called the button hatch at 7.....some late quitters and others that were early quitters or missed non-fertiles. candled 56 day 6ers in bator #1. trashed 6 clears....other 4 in with homegrown batch that goes into lockdown on wednesday so i will candle them then and move over. going to hatch homegrown batch in j12 like buttons vs breaking down bator #2 again right now. (only 15 max in homegrown batch). released 5-6 from grow-out. have 1 injured/overbred hen and knuckles in there with 4 littles. all has still been quiet in aviary and no activity in traps so fairly sure must’ve been someone’s cat as i feel if it were raccoons they would’ve been back by now. moved last weeks hatch to shed brooder and popeye didn’t make it. others are doing great! no eggs again past couple days.....of course i think my ratios and ages are all messed up with last weeks losses and traumatizing events!

That first one looks dead. :lau

I'm fixing to move my babies out. I'm double checking to make sure they cannot get stuck in the wire flooring.View attachment 1873998 View attachment 1873999
I somehow ran out of my stash of cardboard boxes to collect the poop so I'm using these aluminum foil things for now.

These are such nice habitats for them!! Making me feel less bad about putting them on wire/in wire cages if I ever get any. Cause it sounds stupid but I honestly didn’t really realize you could put boards and dirt and stuff down or put plants in the pen and all that stuff and make it better. Idk why but for some reason I guess I thought the only way to really have dirt and plants and a nice, happy environment for them was to have them in a ground aviary but now I’m seeing they can be just fine in cages so thanks. Cause an aviary is a lot more expensive and then I also have to deal with integration or just having less quailies or making two aviaries or something. Cages are easier so thanks for showing I can make them just as if not more awesome! Haha although that said, I do eventually want a large aviary with parakeets and/or cockatiels so if that ever happens..... :lau

But that probably won’t happen at this house or any time soon. Expensive to build up a quality flock or even a low quality flock and they’re a lot more complicated to care for than livestock haha

Plus of course a million other things going on atm too.

Actually, not to go off topic, but I think even getting the quail or letting my broody hen hatch any chicks is going to have to go on hold for a while. Have a lot more important things to focus on right now. Including but not limited to my brother’s wedding only being 6 weeks away and I’m in it so lots to do and just don’t really have the time to worry about a whole new species right now or have little brand new babies of any species right before the wedding.
