➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Bear with me...... another epic multi quote. :lau this will be a long one

I can guarantee for asthma and allergies. Row quail eggs. I even have friends that keep a female quail in their flats like parrots just for the eggs.

That is very interesting!! Thank you!!

Raw green beans—mmm. Delicious.

That is true. But only fresh, good ones haha

I eat a fair share of raw quail eggs, however, the ponzu sauce and other ingredients probably offset some of the “healthiness” of it! :gig

Ewwww lol and what is that sauce?

I did find this article. Found it interesting.

https://kitchenicious.com/is-eating-raw-or-undercooked-quail-eggs-safe/

plastic totes work great for initial brooders and can be cleaned and repurposed for storage if you aren’t using for brooding! i keep mine beside me in living room and babies stay up to 2 weeks before i have the need to move them to a larger or covered brooder.

That is an excellent idea.

That many with the same defects would make me tend to think it was genetics.

X2

Last night when I candled all 30 of my eggs I noticed a lot of wonky air cells. I don't think ive seen this many in the same batch yet. :(:fl

:fl

That was my reaction too lol

I made the mistake of replying to a post on the last page and now I've gotten myself lost.:barnie

:lau hope you found your place again.

Thank you! This sounds delicious lol I’ve saved this and some of the other recipes I’ve been given lately. I think I will make this one. It looks easy and delicious and some of my favorite veggies/foods lol

You're steaming them for too long. With a good steamer, for example, half a bunch of asparagus takes about 8-9 minutes. A steamer basket full of broccoli about 12-15 (depends on how full). Zucchini about 12 minutes.

I think I only did the squash like 8-10? But they were slices and also only one layer. Maybe slices or thin layers aren’t the way to go? And I only have a pan and then another with holes in the bottom that fits on top and I boil water in the bottom and put the veggies in the top and put a lid on it. I think I read once you weren’t supposed to stack them on top of each other and only do a layer on the bottom?? Idk if mushy is the right word but seemed kinda water logged or at least flavorless compared to browning them.

What are the tan things called? Lemons?
And what is this one?
I think I need these kind next after tuxedos unless I get some tux in my current batch.

I need ever color quail now.

:lau think you’re officially addicted.

You are so cute when you are being modest! :love

Interesting. Growth rate will be affected by food, agree. I try to keep the feeders full, but the little turkeys are knocking it over to feed the chickens. Put half a brick on it. Mostly worked. One coop has a whole brick now. Talented, aren't they?

Combine the small eggs with the 6 ounces carcass weights, I've got small jumbos. Answers several questions. Eyeballing the weights again, I'm closer to a 13+ gram average compared to a 11 gram from the Lucky line starters. A bit behind yours, though.

Really like your quail tractor. I could run them in the garden... How often do they rocket out? :p

All very interesting. Thanks.

Put just one or two slices of bacon, cut up. Fresh garlic and an onion to the zucchini.
I throw in some crushed red pepper flakes too.

Thanks!! This sounds really good. Although I’m not normally a big bacon person. I think I would like this.

This post reminded me of this movie.

Now I gotta watch this!!

:sick You are gross Muddy.

X2 lol

But supposedly it’s safe.

https://kitchenicious.com/is-eating-raw-or-undercooked-quail-eggs-safe/

Have you pulled an all nighter?

:lau

I'm too old for those. :old I woke up early and couldn't go back to sleep, so I figured I might as well start my day.

Nonsense! You’re never too old for all nighters :lau

That’s a good idea though lol

The first one looks bigger to me and cheaper but idk.

I like the smaller grids on the first one. Plus, the trays on the second style annoy me.

Trueeee. Those trays suck lol

Either would still be getting wrapped with hardware cloth.

I'm kind of leaning towards the one with the tray so I can use it as a poop collecting tray even though I don't have much poop that actual is able to fall through because of my dirt boxes.View attachment 1889250 View attachment 1889251

Ahh okay. Good idea. The other looks bigger than 18 inches deep??

I'm thinking I need to go ahead and order three now and get to building a stand for them like my other 3 rabbit cages.

I need more cages but I just don't want to build more too heavy things.
I like the rabbit cages I have now the best so far.

I think they’re a great idea.

You know that you can make those same types of cages yourself.

Cage building supplies and tools

True but it’s expensive isn’t it? Unless you’re planning on making them regularly or selling them it seems like a big investment.

Yes but I'm thinking it would cost double to do so.

Seems like it. Even just the tools without the premade panels are crazy lol

The closest guess was german pastel but i didnt ever get a for sure name on the color.

The second is pearl fee.

I have several pearl hens but didnt get a pearl male.

:lau thanks!

I struggle with the same things how they like to throw all their feed to the chickens. Living vicariously watching them free range right?

Agreed ur jumbos are small to me. I wouldve been mad at 6 oz carcasses to my jumbos when i actually had them but these are weights thrown by a color flock.

They really dont rocket out of it i thought they would too so i made the lil door but they havent given me any trouble and i pull the whole top off nearly every day the way it is in that pic. Appareny compared to everyone elses theyre big fat hogs that dont wanna flush as often as smaller quail though. I seldom have flushers anymore. The most of em are 14 wks old. The 10 g egg was The smallest egg i could find in my tray of 50.

Nice!! The pearls are pretty.

And yeah those are impressive sizes for just regular quailies.

Wow that was the smallest!? how big was the biggest?

I dont live on a farm either :gig doesnt stop me from farming my livestock. Doesnt have to be a huge area that eats thousands of lbs of food. Just has to be managed appropriately to be considered a farm and i think u cut the cake.

Very true!! I agree. We’re not a “farm” by any means but I have a huge garden this year and planning on quail soon and of course I already have the chickens. We have 2.5 acres but more than enough. Hopefully one day I can have goats or sheep. :fl

Everything inside the skin is sterile until you expose it, excepting the contents of the digestive system. Meat is a good substrate for microbes, though. It’s important to keep everything very clean so that nothing contaminates the carcass... not because the carcass is unclean of itself.

Thanks! I never thought of it like this but it makes sense.

My DH would make me add a caution label for folks who do that. “All eggs must be thoroughly cooked. If you don’t cook your eggs, then it’s on you.” (But probably more polite and lawyerly.) But then he would freak if I were even to sell them at all. (Retired-But-not-recovering insurance claims adjuster) :lau

:lau

It costs extra to get started with buying the tools, etc. It also costs extra if you buy the pre-cut pieces instead of the rolls of wire. There are also many other sites that sell the supplies and they may or may not be less costly.

That’s true but at least on that site some of the tools were like 4, 5 hundred  :th

Yea, but not for 120 quail... I would need at least 4 totes, probably 6 even...

True! Haha maybe make stackable brooders?

I like your 4 ft box and the stackable idea jus donno how id incorporate it so am anxious to see what you come up with. I read your shed build last night did u ever finish those quail cages? Its not warm enough and still a garage consideration?

All good ideas I think.

More like ten totes.
Totes get small really fast.

True lol

I did not finish the cages in the shed. I am debating right now over quail in the shed or the garage. I would like them in the shed if they will be alright through the winter. I can get pretty cold here in January though... so I am worried.

I think they will be okay as long as there is adequate ventilation. They have warm feathers. Even song birds stay warm in winter if they stay and they are way smaller.

It will not be as cold in there with quail because they will be giving off body heat.

Very true.

Holy Quail! :eek:1,371 messages I missed.:thI think I might skip ahead a bit.

I don’t blame you! Do it!

I think you might be worrying too much about the cold... But I could be wrong.

 surprised you say that being from Texas/the south where you think 60 is cold :lau

They get negatives and deep snow quite a bit I think. But they probably will be fine in a shed with their feathers. As long as they have good ventilation.

Thank you. I cannot really see if it pooping or not as it is with the others. I am in Bulgaria (Eastern Europe). I feed them turkey starter with 24% protein. This is the best we have in terms of proteins. I also give them hard boiled egg yolk.
Can you post a picture of it (the quail)? Do you have a scale that you can weigh it on?

I think if you built the frame out of lumber u could just encase each spot where ud put a cage and not have to buy the cages.

That’s true.

My problem is I suck at building things.
The two cages I have built I do not like anymore.

Aw I’m sure you’ll get better at it with more practice!! Or maybe you could do a metal or PVC stand?

Can you separate it? Maybe offer it some scrambled or boiled egg mashed up or plain yogurt? Or add some water to the feed and make a mash? See if he will eat that? You can’t force him to eat, true, but you can offer him something more appealing and hope he decides to eat on his own. And I would keep at it with the vitamins. Do you have anything similar to nutridrench there?

The shed is 10x12. In winter there will be 5 ducks, 8 chickens, 4 turkeys and our covey of quail (say 2-4 dozen probably). The shed is not insulated and preferably not heated (I could heat it with an electric heat source). All but the quail would be allowed/encouraged to go outside everyday.

I guess that would be a good amount of body heat... keeping the humidity down may become a problem this winter though with all that exhaling. That means I would increase ventilation, would would leak more heat out. I am confident the chickens, turkeys and ducks will be fine if it gets cold in there. The quail though...

I think they will be fine but who knows haha

You've seen mine. Will Mex help you? I can be bribed. :D

You first ones were good. You used scrap lumber and they were cost effective. The rabbit cages were a surprise (as was the incubator). Real easy to build a box.

Wow man yea thats alota breathing i should have known youve thought this through. Lots of people use battery cages and do well with it. Im sure youve looked into those. Would fit nicely in a garage. With your space problem thats the only way youd be able to meet the demand youve described to me. Maybe itll be like you can keep the demand high without enough supply and youll be able to keep things on a more constant even keel vs the spring boom lots of us face. Feast or famine. Also ull be able to charge more tell the people how theres alot of demand and you can only fill so many orders.

Best option- move to a farm :lau
