āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

OK, here's the progress so far.
@RUNuts Yes, there are plans for poop trays. As for plans on paper... nope. I am basing it on a number of things I have seen as well as what we like (and dislike) about our existing quail cage.

Sides. The angled boards were not in the previous pics. They show the slope of the floor though, which will bring the eggs to the front for us (works great in our current cage).

Now I (and DS who refuses to let me work alone :highfive:) just need to staple in hardware cloth on the floors. I think I am just going to use deer fencing or chicken wire on the sides since this will be protected inside the shed or garage. It saves money, and I have it on hand already. I am going to place two doors in the front of each cage. I may or may not add a slot and ledge for eggs to roll out of the cages. That's actually the place that our younger quails escaped numerous times (fortunately, they were still in the sunroom then). I figure that it's not difficult to reach in and collect the eggs, especially when they will roll right to the front anyway.

I have to figure out a no-spill feeder... The current cage has a coop section with a solid floor so we don't them spilling food so much. They just eat it off the floor once the feeder is empty. Now that the new cages have all wire floors, spilled food is going to go right into the poop trays/drawers and be wasted. So I need to minimize the amount of food they spill.

BTW, this is only five 2x4s so far. I ripped them each down to three 1"x1.5" boards. I have two more 2x4s left to work with to frame the drawers and add some reinforcements to the structure. I think I can do it. I will need to get some thin plywood though for the drawer bottoms.

I think you messed up and need to restart and send me that one so i can "fix" it :D ill pay you in eggs :p

:gig

:fl for learning balance they shouldnt drown if theyre in there. So shouldnt chill if u use a heat bulb but didnt i read you have a heat plate? Is it drying them out quickly enough?
Yeah the heat plate dries them quick if they go to it. Problem is they just hang out in the water? I took one water away and there have been no more incidents

Are those 1x1s as legs??

@sarabeth485 Congratulations on your eggs! I like the spotty one. Do you know which hen laid it?

@el dorado quail I have marbles in the water so they won't drown. But several just like playing in the water...

I would not cover the bator...they won't be able to see to get out of the egg.

Are you serious?? I was seriously told they should hatch in dark..?

#35 hatched today....curly toes but getting around okay so far.....just lost 1:barnie for total 3 losses. removed some for sure quitters but had strong movement with internal pip in 1 remaining egg so giving it another 24+hours with :fl:fl
this is my largest hatch in months and I had forgotten how messy this many babies can be!!! definitely have to clean the brooder soon! got it done but still 2 ā€œruntsā€.... curly toe and 1 other one that’s smaller and acting weird ā€œsleepyā€. other 30 are much larger and normal activity levels.

What are you doing with the curly toes?

My batch just finished hatching this morning with the last one that came out with my assistance. 100 eggs from 3 different suppliers. 19 did not hatch, 2 of which had pips, but died. I am not planning to open the eggs. I had an internal divider in the incubator to calculate the hatch rate per supplier, but the chicks jumped over it when they hatched, so they got mingled. 5 of the hatched died, 2 were blind or maybe did not open their eyes properly, 1 drowned - had splayed legs and could not get out of the water. I had 4 that were sleeping all the time. 1 recovered and OK now, 1 is looking bad and the others died (I didn't do anything about them).

I must say I will never do that many eggs again. I've slept 2 hours last night. I am going to take some pictures and post now.

OK, show time.. No 1 is unknown color to me. Have not had such before and I like it! I may keep them for myself.
No 2 is some silver, which I have also not seen before, so I will keep that one too.
No 3 looks like a tuxedo, I am not sure??? I will keep that one too.

And I think I should stop looking at them as I want to keep more and more, there won't be much for the client left :hmm
