@DK newbie can most likely give you some better insight as to what gender they are.!

I almost agree with you.
1. Female
2. Unsure, probably male (it seems to be undergoing a dramatic color change and this is most common in males)

Thank you! I quite appreciate the help.

Checked my notes and found out I'm a day late. Lock down tonight! Day 14 began. Potential popcorn on Saturday??? Gotta get the brooder assembled. I really don't want to butcher, but I should.

So chickens are taking a molt break. Eating more quail eggs. Very convenient. And tasty! If I keep this up, I will need 12 hens a laying.

My DS loves hardboiled quail eggs. They are just the right size for him. He tends to have 2 of them for breakfast with 2 or 3 maple sausage links.

Our 3-4 week olds have been in the new cage for a few days now. We have to clean the poop drawer out daily. I knew they pooped a lot, but I didn't realize it was this much.
It's not too difficult to clean at least. We use a 4" wide scraper to scrape everything into a pile and then scoop it up into a bag destined for the compost pile. If we don't clean it, it gets FUNKY really fast.:sick I'm thinking about adding sand and PDZ, but I feel like it would be a bit more difficult to clean - especially the feed that they drop. It's not like cleaning under a chicken roost where I expect just poop (much larger than quail poop too) and some feathers. DW is saying we should lay newspaper down in the trays. I'm thinking that's a pretty good idea to make clean up easier - and it's free, compostable and we would be recycling/repurposing.

BTW, there's 26 birds 3-4 week olds in 1 4'x2' cage. They still have plenty of room for now, but the number of birds is adding to the rapid build up of poop. We will decide whether not to divide them into 2 cages after I cull the excess males at 8 weeks, or sooner if they do get crammed.

:gig yes they poop Alot thats why the wire became such an ordinary thing for keeping them clean and healthy :gig

So design tips you might have are deeper poop trays to make it neccessary less often?

I agree with the newspaper yes sir But wanna add my 2cts working with mewspaper often, use thicker layers of it or else itll stick to the tray and not be nearly as efficent. Maybe a layer of linoleum if you've got it laying around? Sand and dust baths Def help me keep the wood in my cages (for resting feet) from gathering a Layer of poop.
