Our 3-4 week olds have been in the new cage for a few days now. We have to clean the poop drawer out daily. I knew they pooped a lot, but I didn't realize it was this much.

It's not too difficult to clean at least. We use a 4" wide scraper to scrape everything into a pile and then scoop it up into a bag destined for the compost pile. If we don't clean it, it gets FUNKY really fast.

I'm thinking about adding sand and PDZ, but I feel like it would be a bit more difficult to clean - especially the feed that they drop. It's not like cleaning under a chicken roost where I expect just poop (much larger than quail poop too) and some feathers. DW is saying we should lay newspaper down in the trays. I'm thinking that's a pretty good idea to make clean up easier - and it's free, compostable and we would be recycling/repurposing.
