i checked a few of mine today and looks like scarlet tux is male and overall looking pretty heavy on males again in general!! there’s definitely a sparkly and a pharaoh male and 2 grau males (foomanchu, and mr squeakers). supposed to drop 2in rain on saturday so we probably going to pop some heads and butcher since we won’t be able to do anything else!!Yes this is exactly what I was thinking and what finally made me just do it.
Now I need to hurry up and decide if I have any other females.
I'm thinking I'm ready to practice vent sexing.
Indeed, use thumb and finger to pinch through and separate neck vertebra from skull and pull while holding body with other hand with neck between first two fingers. Head comes off easily.Keep in mind the scissors are optional. Pulling the heads off is easy.
Bleed out stops when the heart stops beating, for chickens and turkeys it happens in less than 2 minutes. How long does it take for them to bleed out
i just bought DH the outdoor edge butcher kit from amazon ($63) He absolutely loves it so far and is hoping to give it a good “breaking in” for quail, venison, etc asap!!View attachment 1942901
Are thies scissors good for butchering quail?
He’s in for a treat with that! Their game shears are lifesavers for processing quail and squirrel!i just bought DH the outdoor edge butcher kit from amazon ($63) He absolutely loves it so far and is hoping to give it a good “breaking in” for quail, venison, etc asap!!
DH just twists and pulls (with quail) heads pop off pretty easily for him....I haven’t gotten to the point of trying it yet with butchering adults, but i have done it culling chicks. As you're cutting the head you still have to kind of pull it off too.
You'll see when you actually do it.
yes... in our “system” DH pops the head and deposits it in one bag and holds the body upside down for about a minute or so to bleed out before depositing it in the second bag. Once we have all the quail we are taking out, we butcher and brine. we let them “rest” in the brine for 24-48 hours prior to freezing or cooking.Do i need to let them bleed out
