You may be right. The couple of days thing is because even if he started breeding the moment that he was put in the cage, he can't fertilize the eggs that are already past a certain point in the process. Eggs that are already in the shell gland definitely cannot be fertilized at that point.

From experimenting:
Day 0 - mating
Day 2 - fertile eggs.
Day 1 - we ate the eggs so don't know but will experiment next time I start collecting for hatching (probably in a month)
