➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Thanks!! That makes a lot of sense. I never thought of that. Although it’s very cold lately so I don’t think it would be stored too warm but who knows.

So you don’t think I should try resting them?

I’m so nervous with it being my first hatch it feels so weird going “against” the usual advice/info so to speak. But then again I did that with my chicks too. Went with MHP both batches instead of heat lamp and I was a little nervous about that too (although not really cause it made so much more sense to me right from the beginning) and that turned out really well!! But yet everyone says you will kill the chicks if you don’t do 95 under a heat lamp and gradually lower 5 degrees each week for 8 weeks. I also put them outside at literally a week old and integrated pretty young too. So I guess I’m used to doing things different haha

Also you and @Texas Kiki seem to have amazing hatches and Kiki does everything “wrong” according to traditional information available but it seems to work great!! Maybe I need to hatch @Texas Kiki method LOL

I need to test mine! I had it running for a few days last week but turned it off.
My advice on this is do the first hatch the “right way” then every hatch after that adapt to what you feel works best for you I candle mine everyday after day three and and then at lock down before pips I try to find where the internal pip is so I can have the egg turned so they aren’t pipping against the floor but that’s just me. I’m also occasionally guilty of helping a chick out of the egg. But I’ve been hatching a while and my dad and grandpa used to hatch multiple batches chicks every year for years my grandpa always said never help a chick out of the egg that can’t get out on its own because it’s a weak chick but my dad always helped and I sometimes help sometimes I don’t it really depends on the hatch. Just my 2 cents.

My egg is 12 grams, each of the three big ones is 15 grams.
@Nabiki I measure in mm, so how many mm if you don't mind measuring please? Mine are 33-34mm from a non-Jumbo hen
How are you measuring? Are you measuring the circumference or the diameter and is it the width or the length?

For conversion purposes, 25.4 mm = 1 inch.

I mean, seriously, don't all people keep hammers, hatchets, eggs, light bulbs, mini-cast-iron skillets, wire, squares, levels and numerous other items in their shed/quail house?

:lau I have garden stuff in my chicken shed. I really need to sort through that shed. Lots of random stuff I don’t need/want anymore.

Same with the garage. And my room. :lau

But I still know where everything is usually haha

I’ve been trying to organize all my stuff though. The garage is mostly my parents stuff and it’s a disaster but I do have some stuff out there.

Thanks!! This is really helpful!! I think I’ll definitely do it right the first time. So maybe I’ll set tomorrow? The eggs are here, PO just called about quarter to 8, but I haven’t picked them up yet. Won’t have the chance till probably at least 9. Then I’ll let them sit a while first. I just turned on the incubator last night. Testing it again and hopefully my hygrometers get here today. :fl they’re supposed to but it could be later today. I may have to just buy one after all.

Barring special circumstances, I only candle at lockdown. Special circumstances include a rotten aroma coming from the incubator.

That makes sense hah

@Texas Kiki my last hatch was 4 out of 7 fertile eggs, and I am not hatching anymore this year. They hatched on Oct 10. I am full of baby chicken and I have no more space for other birds over the winter.
Added.
Thanks.
How many hatched from your last batch of 40 set?

I started following this a few days ago and am living vicariously through yall with the adorable babies! I got two button quails (adults) a month ago and have really been bitten by the quail bug. I want some coturnix now as well!
You need to get a few different colors of coturnix.

Would it be absurd to keep two female coturnix indoors in a guinea pig cage? They seem like bird equivalents to guinea pigs size-wise, not too large as long as I avoid the jumbos. My buttons do very well indoors and cause no trouble at all, but I hear coturnix can have more smell? I really keep up on cleaning for my indoor animals like a full time job (that I enjoy) but I don't want anything that's going to really reek. No outdoor space at all here...

If I got cots I want to hatch and socialize chicks so they are tame. Though my buttons have gotten very friendly just through mealworm treats every time I open their cage.
Yes you can do this.
As long as you like to clean there should be no smell.

I don't keep any of mine indoors yet but I keep my outdoor cages clean, with dirt, and there is no smell.
