➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I don't have a way to run electricity out there without the puppies eating an extension cord and I couldn't stand the smell when they were inside. Fortunately we don't have heavy predation here. Mostly owls and hawks and the quail are in an aviary.

Are your quail the wild tupe or do you have different colors?
trench a line with a shovel. some ground protecting wire has to be 2' in most areas, but if ran inside pvc conduit it can be only 6" deep. that's easy to dig and lay. I connected power to my shed off an outdoor outlet. We already had a breaker for the patio, so now the shed and patio are on the breaker together. It's not much power pull unless I'm running power tools, but haven't come close to popping the breaker yet. just a 120 amp is fine. It's relatively simple electrical work.

How are the babies?
Any more eggs hatch today?

We have hawks, owls, eagles, osprey, falcons, foxes, coyotes, mountain lions, neighbor dogs, and most critically, hungry black bears, the highest concentration in the entirety of the sierra nevadas.

Atm I have golden layer, italian speckled, roux dilute, charcoal, rosetta, tibetan, blue/silver, german pastel red, silver italian, and falb fee, but I have another hatch planned for late spring for a few I'm missing like snowie/pearl-fee/pansy(US version, not UK/sparkly). I have a rainbow coturnix addiction. :wee

Wow .You do have a rainbow of colors! And with those predators roaming around I'd probably keep my birdies indoors too.

I don't know what all mine are for sure. I had a couple of silvers that had mobility problems so we had to dispatch those. I have the wild type, speckled golden or Italian golden I'm not sure, plus some I'm unsure about with white bodies and a dark stripe near the eyes. Haven't been able to find a pic online like it.

There was the 1 more hatch this morning along with the 1 more death, but in the brooder this time for unknown reason overnight. While I have been at work, another chick did hatch. My wife has since moved it to the brooder. She says that all the chicks in the brooder are doing well. I am worried about the few with badly splayed legs. I do not want to cull them this early if they can live. I will likely cull them at 8-9 weeks though or give them leg bands to mark them as non-breeders just in case there's any genetic causes.

So far we have 53 chicks. 9 eggs still in the incubator. I need to get some turkey eggs in the incubator tomorrow, and it will have been 20 days for the quail eggs. I'm not certain what to do if there's still quail eggs waiting to hatch... The turkey eggs are cannot wait much longer though.
After this hatch, I realized I will not have quail eggs to incubate until March when these birds are able to lay eggs... And I will then have to plan hatches around my planned business travel. I'm traveling for a week per month for the foreseeable future starting in March (at least between March and September). I guess the turkey eggs will take up some of the time between now an March. I may have to order more quail eggs though or find a local supplier.

8 or 9 weeks seems like too long if they can't walk good, doesn't it?

Well, unfortunately it took a mass mortality event re: bear to learn that :/ Even the garage wasn't quite safe enough, but the *electrified* garage with spring-tensioned locks hopefully will be.

Post pics and I'm happy to help (poorly) guess :D The yellow complex (manchurian, golden layer, italian, italian speckled, etc) in particular is a bit tricky as it's obviously made up of a locus of genes. I can probably tell you the common name(s) for what you have but even that varies widely from breeder to breeder.

Very cool, thank you very much! I think there's a thread specific to color on here somewhere, don't want to hijack this one. I'll get some pics this weekend and tag you over there.

We don't believe in hijacks.
