I blame you guys, I was perfectly happy with the birds I have and then you show me cute finches and I looked them up several times at work today. Now I'm going to have to avoid the pet store. But they might be in the future, in the spring/summer.

finches are awesome but DONT give them a nest if you get a male/female pair unless you want babies!!! they are like guppies!!! i’ve only had my zebras since labor day and they are due to hatch 2nd round of babies next week!!! 4 eggs each clutch.....i’m overrrun with finches!

he’s growing....just not quite as fast as the others! I released my HAL babies today into the aviary.....a couple still look the size of 2 week olds! only 18 left and not sure how many will survive between the weather and my meanie birds! i ended up putting all of them in my big “bench” hideaway with food will have to see how many stay there and whether i need to put water inside for them. this was a weird batch of babies....i’ve got a few that are absolutely gorgeous colors (grau-fee) but only 1 “vocal” male, everyone else extremely docile and none of them did the usual try out my wings etc. they didn’t even try to escape the bin or even leave it when DH put it on its side.....”melanie” and my female chukars looked to be the most territorial “threats” to them......”Gimpy” surprisingly is the least of the “meanies”. will see what happens overnight and hopefully my “favorites” survive so I can get pics for u guys!

the whisper.....idk YET!! as for genders, can’t tell yet with the babies that are about 6 weeks old but they’re beaks are almost completely orange already which is making it more difficult to differentiate them from my female. supposed to have full adult coloring by 3 months....my initial guess is that the triplets are 1 male and 2 female based on difference in behavior. as far as selling them, i’ve got one local “mom&pop” pet store that may be interested, but i haven’t discussed anything yet for finches, just buttons and was told they would have to get mgr approval but definitely interested......

What happens if you don't provide an actual nest? Will they not nest on the floor?

they will sleep on the perch....this time i was trying to remove eggs before she started sitting on them....got one removed and next time i checked they were sitting on 4

Finally got some pics of the escapees! 6 months ago these two got out of their pen, (pair Reeves pheasants) along with some others that I managed to recover.
Predators haven't gotten them, yet nor have they moved on? Usually if they get out they are gone in quick chilly minute! they have completely reverted back to being "wild"! I can't even get close to them at night when they roost. too smart to be caught in a recall trap.
I apologize for the poor quality of the pics....dadgum phone camera.

I love zebras, especially Florida Fancies. I have been sooo tempted to get some, but I remember very well how one pair turned into 60 birds lol It's great that you have an outlet for them. There are hardly any Mom & Pop stores around here anymore. But, if I find on that will buy birds, I'm setting up cages!
