I second the do not open. I don't think it's a good idea to disturb the eggs while the chicks are maneuvering to hatch position. Any extra movement takes a toll on their energy reserves.

I don't think you're being neurotic. Coturnix in the U.S. at least are pretty inbred on average. Beak deformities pop up pretty quickly. Good to have a wide gene pool. My birds are from five different sources and I plan to buy from at least three more before I go closed flock and try to get NPIP. Although I kind of have partial crazy prepper motivations for keeping quail too so my plan is to be as close to indefinitely self sustaining gene-wise as possible.

I have a similar principal if not exact specification. Closest is aunts to nephews and vice versa, basically. The more unrelated birds you have in your initial flock the more heavily you can linebreed to specific desirable birds without issue down the line, so that's another reason to buy more, @Crazydoglady99
